This is not a perfect. This is a practice.

Blogger Sarah Davis, the Yoga Cowgirl, shared a post that explained that she uses the phrase “this is not a perfect this is a practice” when teaching yoga. The phrase leapt off the page for me. I had a riding lesson /training session the next day. The phrase travelled through my mind often as I was riding. Inspired by the Paralympians who ride without stirrups I had volunteered to do 5 minutes of work with no stirrups. My coach Belinda Trussell had set up a robot camera and we recorded several sections of the lesson. And btw it was extremly hot and humid with a humidex of 40 Celsius! The section with me riding without stirrups is in fact a practice and not a perfect. I am happy with many things in the video and how this “practice” is moving Biasini and me forward. Here is the video.

A beautifully done “imperfect” ride! My motto (same for a lot of folks I think): Perfect is the enemy of the good.

Riding without stirrups is fantastic balance exercise. Trish has the daughters ride transitions without stirrups as one, twenty-minute exercise segment. My daughters don’t tack up the stirrups if they know a no stirrups exercise is part of the practice session. It is also a good exercise for part-time riders, including western saddle.

I am not volunteering for 20 minutes no stirrup work right away but I will slowly increase the time. It is a valuable exercise and I find it interesting that the lateral work goes better when I’m riding with no stirrups. Better leg position I think. Thanks for your comment David.
