My last lesson until….?

Well, we are now in the second State of Emergency since the Covid Pandemic began almost a year ago. What does this mean for me? It means I can still go to the barn and ride Biasini as we are permitted to “care for and ride our animals”. But lessons are not permitted. I believe this is to stop the spread of Covid in stables where they have group lessons and if the lessons are for children it will mean their parents will also be in the barn . This adds considerably to the numbers of people gathering. The new lockdown restricts the number of people who can gather together to 5. So this would not be possible for a riding school situation. While Oakcrest Farm, where I ride and train with the owner Belinda Trussell , is not a riding school and all of the boarders own their horses and train with Belinda , in private lessons, we must still adhere to the lockdown restrictions. The Covid numbers in Ontario have been rocketing upwards. Our Provincial government feels that the only way to curtail this increase, and to maintain the healthcare system, is to institute another Emergency level lockdown.

The lockdown started on January 14. My last lesson with Belinda was on January 12. We worked on a tricky exercise; down the longside of the arena in canter, renvers, straighten and flying change, two or three strides of canter and renvers, straighten and flying change again. This exercise made Biasini so excited and sensitive he was doing flying changes I was not asking for, even some ones! So to settle him, we just worked on some canter, on a 20 meter circle, and then down the longside and a tiny renvers before coming back to trot. Belinda told me I was going to have to learn how to ride this very sensitive horse. Just moving my leg an inch, just one inch, could be interpreted by him as the aid for a change. This is exciting stuff! So it is hard to know that now there will not be any more lessons and I will not have Belinda’s help for… well who knows how long the lockdown will go on for. Here is a video of part of our lesson on January 12.

I hope we will not be in lockdown too long and in the meantime I am lucky to be able to continue riding on my own. I will just have to be diligent and remember how to ride the sensitive horse!

beautiful — how have I only now discovered your beautiful youtube channel?! & she calls you Leueen — so Anne Leueen is your whole 1st name or 1st & last? very pretty regardless

Anne is my first name and Leueen mu middle name. I don’t use my surname on Social Media.

        I see – pretty name!

Thank you! Leueen is Gaelic and means small coin so its like Penny.

You guys are beautiful in the video. The exercise you described is something like one prescribed by Philippe Karl to make sure that in a flying change the hind end changes first. So cool to know that Biasini is paying such close attention to you.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Interesting to know that it can be used to get the hind end to change first. For me Belinda has chosen the exercise to help me with the canter half pass zig zags. It helps to get the new bend and then ask for the change. It is a tough exercise Alli but a good one.!

I hope vaccinations roll out quickly so we can all get on with our lives, Anne. I’m glad you can still ride Biasini with no restrictions!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes I agree. Up here the vaccine roll out is as slow as molasses on a cold morning. Quite rightly they are vaccinating health care workers and the elders who are in long term care as a first priority. But there seems to be a shortage in the readily available supply of vaccine. So I think that for those in their 70s , like my husband and myself, it will be a wait until late spring or summer. But being able to ride will keep me sane!

Take good care of yourselves there, Anne!

The two of you look fabulous together! I really enjoyed watching that video. It tis wonderful that you can keep riding during the lockdown, even though I understand the frustration of not being able to take lessons.

I remind myself that in the grand scheme of things not having lessons is a small rice to pay. So many people

      1. anne leueen Avatar

sorry I got cut off there….so many people are struggling to make ends meet and are loosing their businesses. So I am fortunate. I can ride and that will help me physically and mentally. You stay safe too Maria.

Hopefully, it won’t last too long 🙂 It seems Covid is moving/spreading in waves – and worst is the wintertime.
btw, what are your views about a vaccine? “For” or “against”?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I am 71 and my husband is 73. We always get flu vaccines each winter. I have considered these Covid vaccines and done research on them. I will be getting one when it is available for me . However I think many people will not. Our son is on a project in Montenegro and is working with someone from Slovakia. He told our son that in Slovakia they are having to throw out the vaccine as not enough people are coming forward to get it. This man had it from his doctor and the doctor said that they are just not able to convince people to take it. To me what this means is the virus will still persist in areas of the world that are like this and it will mutate and so on and so forth.

Yes, agreed, it’s happening – a lot of ppl are scared of vaccine.
The thing is… the C-disease is going to exist anyway, our epidemiologist said that taking vaccine doesn’t prevent/or stop C-19/or save you from getting sick, it’s just doesn’t make you SO much sick (= might get light symptoms like flu, tho)… but still with vaccine or without – the spreading somehow will continue. At least, this is what I’ve heard here in Sweden.

I think that our specialists here would agree. It is not a silver bullet. But if it can lessen the death rate that s a plus. And it is not just the elderly who die. There are young people who are otherwise fit and healthy who die. So if we can slow it down I think that is a big plus. I think the new variants are a concern. This is one smart virus. But perhaps the vaccine can slow the new variants down a bit too.

Yes, agreed about that, it would be great to slow down covid. Hopefully, we can see results this summer & autumn! 🤞💜

Shame you are not in Florida. Everything is allowed. Our Governor allows bars to decide how many people they serve 😔

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well a lot of Canadian horse people have decided not to go to Florida this year. Insurance companies will not give travel medical insurance for Covid and we still have a closed border so we could not drive down we would have to fly and rent a car . Also my husband would not be comfortable with the Covid situation in Florida. So that is that. I will survive not having lessons. I think the lockdown will be lifted before too long.

      1. susiesopinions Avatar

I was being fastidious, meaning that you wouldn’t want to be here. British humour.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Well when you said the bars were open I thought uh oh I’d be taking to drink if I was there. Just kidding. I like your sense of humor 😄

I’m so thankful you can still ride and work on things the best you can and ride the forest trails. So sorry about the new lockdowns and a hold on lessons. I always love your lesson videos! Like I’m sitting next to Belinda watching you as she coaches. ❤️ Stay safe, and give Biasini a carrot from Chloe and Zack! 🐴❤️

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I will give him a carrot and tell him who they came from. He will like that. It is hard but the hospitals are getting to be too full up and the ICUs are stressed. This is all about the aftermath of Christmas and people who did NOT stay home. We were told to do that but is seems a lot of people including politicians travelled about. Ah well. I just hope it does not go on for too long. Missing my lessons is so disappointing but when i think of the healthcare workers and how tired and over worked many of them are after 10 months of Covid I realize my problems are nothing. You stay safe too Diana.💕

When I read about Ontario returning to a lockdown a few days ago, I wondered how it would affect your riding. At least you’ll be able to ride. Not taking lessons must be a bummer, but at least you know what to work on.

  10. Gavin and Wyatt Avatar

I enjoyed hearing all the terminology, even though I was not sure what it all means. Also, I imagined what the other horses were thinking while they watched. Any road, it’s a grand video.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you I thought about trying to describe what a “renvers” is but decided against it as it is confusing even to those of us who know it all too well.

      1. Gavin and Wyatt Avatar

It was a pleasure just to watch.

I am sorry to hear about the lockdown situation and your loss of instruction time. That is no fun at all. Definitely good that you can still visit your horse and ride though!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes in the spring lockdown we could not even visit the barn and that was awful. But I will survive a lack of lessons and just have to work hard on my own, in between hacks to the forest of course.😀
