Bird of the week LII

Little Blue Heron. Both male and female build nest on a platform and have one brood per year. Both male and female incubate the eggs. And both male and female feed the young for 42-29 days These herons eat fish and aquatic insects.

    That’s interesting. Not having met this species before I looked at the information on the Cornell Lab website: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Little_Blue_Heron/lifehistory

    It seems that they are ecosystem engineers. This is one of the things the page had to say: Little Blue Herons and neighboring colonial birds have a pronounced impact on their nesting habitat—stunting the growth of vegetation by harvesting nest material and sometimes killing trees outright by the accumulation of guano.

      Oh my that is not good!!But in defense of the little blue heron the large pond at the barn where my horse lives in Wellington Florida there is no evidence of this destruction or of
      guano killing trees , But they do not nest here either.
