Shocking News!!!

I can tell you that the Dressage world is in an uproar. Yesterday I read a post by Horse and Hound that detailed the shocking news that a young woman, Rebekka Klubein had gone to the well known and supposedly highly reputable Helgstrand Stud in Denmark and worked there as a groom. What Andreas Helgstrand did not know was that she had a hidden camera and what she had filmed became a 2 part documentary entitled Operation X the Secrets of the Horse Billionaire that aired on Danish Television November 23 and what she filmed has stunned the equestrian world! Horses being held in hyprflexion of their necks, horses with blood on their mouths, horses with welts from being beaten with whips Rebekka asked some of the othher grooms what they did about the marks from whips and spurs; They told her they cover them with colored cream ( shoe polish) Horse and Hound has had access to the documentary and has seen both epidodes. Investigative journalist Morten Spiegelhauer hosted the documentary and interviewed expert trainers and vets and asked for their opinion about what they saw on the videos. They all agreed it was abusive riding.

He also interviewed one former rider. She told him there were ” a lot of bad expriences at Helgstrand”. She said all employes had to sign a contract blocking them from speaking out about what went on there.” I lied like hell about what it was like to be there because I couldn’t say how awfull it was.” Morten also interviewed a former barn manager and she told him that at Helgstrand Dressage the concept was all about ” selling as much as possible as quickly as possible”.Animal welfare was never discussed.

Also Rebekka said she worked a 47 hour work week for 80 Danish Krone. This is a pittance. There is no mandatory minimum wage in Denmark. She also said that it was common to see grooms and riders in tears. When Rebekka tried to speak to managment about increasing wages and decreasing the hours worked she was told that grooms come and go. New ones could always be found!

For me the worst thing about all this is the proof of horse abuse. These animals did not ask to be forced into painful hyperflexion or to beaten with whips and spurred till their flanks were bleedingl!

Our lives begin to end on the day when we remain silent and don’t speak out about what mattersl” Martin Luther King.

I was inspired to write this post when I read that quote from MLK. I must speak out about this abuse of these horses. And what will happen now?

For a start Andreas Helgstrand, who has represented Denmark at 8 major Championhips , including being on the bronze medal winning team at the European Championship in September, has been removed from the Danish Dressage team and will be excluded from riding for Denmark and is not allowed to take part in any of the Teams activities. He has also been reported to police for horse abuse

The DRF ( Danish Riding Federation) has asked that the riders whose faces are all blurred in the video to come forward and bring themselves before the disciplinary committee. If they do not do this then the DRF will take measures to identify them and they will be forced to appear before the committee.

Finally all competitions to be hosted by Helgstrand Event will be cancelled. This includes the Danish Championships in May and Championships for Jumping Vaulting and Dressage in June have also been cancelled.

Is this enough? If this can be the start of an end to horses being pushed too much with no regard for their mental or long term physical health, just so they can be sold for huge amounts of money, then this would be a good thing. I have attended the Gala evenings hosted by Helgstrand Dressage at their facility in Wellington Florida.I was not aware as I watched these horses of how they were being treated on a day to day basis. The only thing I thought was that the horses all had what is descirbed as the”auction trot” This is a huge an impressive flashy trot. I do not want to think about how this was achieved.

Just for the record not all trainers employ these methods. The trainers I work with do not. I would not train with them if they did not put the welfare of the horse first and foremost. They always put the horse first and that is how it should be.

You have observed very well !! And you are correct in your assessment 👏 👍

This goes way way way back to Blue Hors Matine and could be seen by anyone who was tuned into the clues…head cranked back into the chest, tail constantly swishing like the rotors on a helicopter, hollow back, poll not the highest point. Pounding the ground instead of “floating” in piaffe & passage. Flicking forelegs in extended trot. Head bent into position by unforgiving reins. Not a hint of lightness or relaxation. But plenty of tension. Dancing horse? Well maybe if your idea of dancing is a lot of flashy leg work. Retired after an injury at age 10. Then dead at 13 and no one explaining how it happened except for a mysterious broken leg. Sorry for sounding like a curmudgeon but I am having a lot of trouble with competition dressage refusing to play by the rules in the FEI’s own rule book. And the horses take the brunt of it because operations like Helgstrand’s knew they could get away with it.

This is grim news. It seems the grooms were treated almost as badly as the horses.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

      Yes they were.

A least they could leave, unlike the poor horses.

          Exactly!!

It is surprising from the standpoint Helgstrand Dressage is known to be a very tight organization, every aspect of their operation held like state secrets. A couple of our European riding acquaintances said there were always whispers of impropriety at Helgstrand, especially within dressage circles. Many dismissed the whispers as rumor-mongering at the very least, slander at the very worst. When you get to be a large operation like Helgstrand, and with a reputation of being the best, there is considerable pressure to shortcut everything. Especially on patience. Blood in the mouth, whip marks, spur marks and outright abuse is rather common in Europe. The FEI says they’ve cracked down on abusive practices, but they really haven’t.

In uniform appearance, carrying a whip is required in dressage. In showjumping, it is not. Carrying a whip is optional. We do not carry whips, ever. In practice or in the show ring. You want to effect change, you start there. Drop the whip as a uniform requirement.

In the USA, the USDA make periodic inspections of performance barns. In the short time of having a performance, five years, we’ve been inspected twice. By God, you better make sure your paperwork and vaccination records are in order. Mark and Trish run a performance barn too. In the 20+ years of operating one, they’ve been inspected 6-8 times. Inspections are not high on the USDA priority list, but give them a reason, they will inspect frequently. Helgstrand, it appears, had a very cozy relationship with the Danish federation, Danish authorities and the FEI to the point where the whispers and misgivings were written off or ignored.

Thanks for this welll thought out comment. I agree with everything you have said. I know that when I went to the evening galas at Helgstrand in Wellington I thought all the riders looked like strong men and women who rode quite forcefully but it struck me that most of the horses looked like pretty hot types. I did not think I would be the right rider for most of them. Even Belinda didn’t think she would like to ride many of them. I just hope some good will come out of this for the sake of the horses 🐎 🙏

Thank you for sharing and help spread the shocking news. I too am proud the young woman went undercover to reveal the abusive behaviors for these poor horses. I hope they will now have a better life as they get rehomed. So very sad.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It is sad and Andreas Helgstrand is one of the top dressage riders in the world. For me that makes it doubly shocking and disappointing 😞

It is isn’t it? For me as a horse person who previously viewed Andreas Helgstrand as one of the world’s top riders. For me this was truly shocking 😲

      1. DeWetsWild Avatar

Perhaps some good will come of it in the end as more and more people speak out and bring these loathsome practices and offenders into the light.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

I really hope so. Thanks for commenting.

What a tragic story, how can anyone look themselves in the mirror knowing they’re abusing an innocent animal. I’m glad she went undercover to expose such a horrendous situation. Does the country of Denmark have laws in place to remove and rehome abused horses? Thank for sharing this story, the more people that know the better.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I agree that the more people who know the better.
