Yesterday we went to Niagara Falls with our Grandson. These falls have a huge presence and power. The Horseshoe Falls,on the Canadian side never ceases to amaze me.
Our Grandson hopped up onto the fence so I could take a photo of him with the river dropping over the edge in the background.
I think the Canadian Horseshoe falls are the most spectacular and the American side (seen in the photo below)less so.
After marvelling at the falls we set off to see the Power Station and Tunnell. Back in the day the station had the river running through it and flowing though numerous turbines to produce electricity. Then the water flowed out through a 2200 meter tunnell . Now the Power station and turbines are still and the water no longer flows through the tunnell but visitors can walk the 2,200 meters ( about 1.37 miles) We descended the 180 feet by elevator to the tunnell which leads to the edge of the Niagara river. We got out and started our walk.
2,200 Meters is a looong walk for someone still recovering from hip surgery. Our Grandson ran on ahead and ran back and forth several times as my husband and I walked at a measured pace. At last we came to the end and stepped out onto the observation deck. Everyone was wearing a poncho as we were now at the bottom of the falls and there was a lot of spray.
As I walked back I took advantage of the small benches at the sides of the tunnell. Our Grandson, a veritable font of youthfull energy, ran back anf forth at least five times. Finally my husband and I, the two septuagenarians, made it back to the elevator and ascended to ground level. Our Grandson immediately climbed up onto a rock in the flower garden.
We told him to “get off there immediately”which he did. It had been a grand day. We drove the two hour drive home and all of us slept very well last night!
