This year we had barn swallows nesting above the side entrance to our house. All of my photos had to be taken through the window so they don’t have the best clarity. We watched as the parent birds would swoop in and give the babies something to eat. Barn swallows are insectivores and this year we have a huge number of mosquitoes so we were happy to have the swallows eating and also feeding them to the little ones.

The little heads would pop up and when one of the parents would swoop in all the little beaks would open. but in what seemed like just a few days they had grown so much! In the photo below you can see what I mean. They were now watching any insects that flew around their nest.

We were worried that one might fall out of the nest and not be able to fly well enough. But that didn’t happen . As of July 8 they had all gone. Flown off into the wild blue yonder! We have not seen any of these barn swallow babies flying around our house. Where did they go? Where do they spend the night? If any of you are familiar with barn swallows I would be happy to know more so please leave a comment below.
This is my response to Don’t hold your breath’s Bird Of the Week challenge.
