Canada Day!

Canada Day is a national holiday in Canada that observes the anniversary of the Confederation in 1867. July 1 commemorates the day when Canada’s original three provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Canada province, which is now Ontario and Quebec) were joined as one nation independent of Great Britain. So in essence it is our independence day .

To celebrate this holiday my husband and I drove to see our daughter and her family. It is an easy 2 hour drive on a big highway. Our daughter had told us there was to be a celebration in one of the parks of the town where she lives. So we all packed into her car with our son in law driving and our Grandson in his car seat next to me.

When we arrived there was a live band playing and lots of people dressed in red and white, the Canadian flags’ colors, and others with t-shirts that gave the date of Canada’s confederation 1867.

I took lots of photos! Below is our daughter and her dog Baxter.

Our grandson and our son in law.

SMILE!!

In the photo above two “giraffes” are being followed by Belly in red trousers and red , black and white striped top . Belly is the mascot for local American Hockey League team the Belleville Senators. Our daughter is the Senior Vice President of the Belleville Sens and Belly was there as he often represents the team at community events.

Above is our grandson who is 8 years old. He was enjoying an ice cream cone that had chocolate and nuts! It was a hot day so he had to eat it fast. One of the nuts is stuck on his cheek!Just above his left ear you can see the little puppy Bentley who is the latest edition to the family . Our daughter is holding him up.

There was also a Wild West Show with horses. Two of the horses were young Canadian horses. This breed is small, black, and they are a nice riding horse. The announcer told us there are only 2000 Canadian Horses left now which was sad to hear. So I was happy to know that these two young Canadian horses were there on Canada day. There were also demonstrations of some very daring Trick riding. Here is a video of a woman standing on two cantering horses. The announcer told us that this was a professional and we were NOT to try this at home!!

Our daughter had water for Baxter and the little puppy but we could tell they were feeling the heat ,as were we, so we set off for home. It was a grand Canada Day and I so enjoyed spending it with family.

As we drove home I reflected on how lucky we are to live in a country like Canada. We have an excellent social safety net and although I am not a fan of most politicians I believe ours are doing a good job and they support the basic human rights that I think really matter.

Is that typical for a Canadian summer? We seem to go from eally hot to chilly and gales and back to hot in the north of Ireland.

We do get hot weather here in the summer, but the recent Temps have been above average.

Do you live near Seattle? We used to go there when inwas a little kid to shop at Frederick’s department store. If you do come to Canada I think you’d enjoy it.
