Bird of the Week: red breasted woodpecker.

We put out oranges cut in half for the Baltimore Orioles . But this week I saw a Red Breasted Woodpecker pecking happily at the oranges.

The red-bellied woodpecker(Centurus carolinus) gets its name from a red patch on the lower abdomen but this is seldom visible in the field. According to the Audubon Field Guide they eat beetles, ants, and insect pests, and ….wild fruits. Now I will add Oranges to that list. This my choice for the Bird of the Week. hosted by I.J. Khanewala . Do take a look at his birds which he photographs so well in his home country, India.

Nicely captured, Anne! I’ll have to try our birds with an orange and see what shows up.

At least once each day, WordPress drops one of the blogs I follow and I have to follow them once again. Today it was your site. 😊

What a nice visitor! Just as long as he leaves your house alone! Ha! Really nice seeing them though.

The woodpeckers have never shown any interest in our house. Not enough peckable wood near the feeder area I guess.

Aw, they’re pretty adorable! We had baby woodpeckers that would try to raid the hummingbird feeder. Who knew they liked sweet, fruity things!

I didn’t but birdwatchers have told me they also like grape jelly! Who knew!!!

Great photos of the woodpecker in your yard.

The pingback has not appeared on my page, and I found this only when I came to your site. Disappearing pingbacks seems to be a feature of wordpress, and it is always safer to leave a comment. It’ll be great if you do that.
