I knew it could happen but…

” If this was a 5 year old horse I could say he absolutely will come back. But this horse at 18? He may not come back.”

This is what the vet said after looking at the ultrasound images of Biasini’s injured leg. I knew that as a ‘senior’ horse he might not heal up so well. They are just like us and as we get older we don’t heal up so well either. But at that moment when the vet said this my heart fell into my boots. What did this mean?Would he have to be retired? Would I be able to ride him again? Ever?

Let me reassure you Biasini is not in pain. He has a tendon injury and it is a bad one but he is not lame or limping in pain. He is only walking since he was diagnosed in Florida with this injury. The vet who examined him here at home and looked at the ultrasound is a vet who has been the Team vet for Canadian Dressage Teams at the World Equestrian Games and the Olympics. So he knows what is required of horse athletes at the upper levels. This is something I found reassuring because I thought that as he knew Biasini was working and competing at an upper level of dressage he was telling me he might not be able to get back to that level. But perhaps he would be rideable?

I could feel my heart sinking as I stood there looking at Biasini. My beautiful multi -talented horse who is equally good out on the forest trail or in the international show ring. He is my heart horse.! He is irreplaceable! How had it come to this? He has never had a days’ lameness or injury in the 9 years I have owned him . But now……..

This is pretty much my idea of a disaster . No horse ? What then? The vet thinks is will be six months total before we can see if it has healed up well enough to allow him to return to some level of being ridden.

The vet then had his assistant give Biasini some sedation and did shock wave treatment on the area of the injury. He will be coming back in two weeks to do more shock wave and also inject PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) into the injury site. Also the vet was going to speak to the farrier that shoes Biasini. He will tell him about the injury and he will be able to design a shoe that will give the injured area some extra support. So there are treatments that have been proven to work well on other horses. I can only hope and pray they will work for Biasini.

Later my coach Belinda Trussell came up and gave me a hug. I needed that hug. Lynsey Rowan who has ridden and successfully competed Biasini while I have been unable to ride due to my hip problems told me she believes he will come back and reminded me of two of Belinda’s horses who had injuries and were now outside cavorting about in their paddock. They are retired but are sound and happy. And that is what really matters.

I must not give up hope. I must not let Biasini think I have given up on him. Fortunately the vet said he agreed with the vet in Florida that Biasini can and should be kept moving. He can have turnout with a small dose of a calmer to keep him from running and any other hijinks. He can also be walked under saddle three days a week for 15 minutes and on other days hand walked for 15 minutes. Today my husband hand walked him and then I hand grazed him on the grass outside the barn. He loves that. And so on we go one day at a time. Positive thoughts and prayers for my beautiful boy are much appreciated. Thank you in advance .

I’m so sorry to read of Biasini’s injury. I’m sending healing thoughts to him and peaceful thoughts to you. It’s so difficult for us when our animals are hurt or sick. He knows you love him and that will help him recover. Take care!

Never was there a more beloved horse and rider than you and Biasini Anne. Remember that love works wonders and of course hope springs eternal. Continue to believe in Biasini and the healing power of your relationship for both of you. I have no doubt you will be riding together again before very long. In the meanwhile trust in his caregivers and expect the best. This too shall pass.

      Yes Tina it will pass
Thanks so much for your comment I really appreciate it.

Medical and veterinary care has advanced so much over the years. Biasini is barely middle aged as horses go. I’m sure his therapy will heal him and you will ride him again soon, Anne. Retirement? Taking forest rides? He will be happy with whatever you choose. He just wants to be near you. ❤️🙏

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I agree Terri that there are medical treatments now that will help him.tremendously. Also he doesn’t have any other health issues. So I’m optimistic😊

Sounds like baby jumping is out, but your Biasini still owes us a visit. Don’t ask us when we’ll make it Ontario, but we will try in the fall … or, maybe in a few weeks. If you have three girls asking directions to Belinda Trussell’s barn with a very large bag of treats, that’ll be us.

While the news is surely very disappointing, a lot of things are working in his favor. The big one is the absence of lameness, he is alert, he looks forward to the visits. One of the things you can do for Biasini is not let your mind go there. It doesn’t help you, it doesn’t help Biasini. Our motto is make the jump off, then go for it. Biasini has made the jump off. It’s all on you to make the magic happen, and it will happen. Eddie, Elizabeth’s golden palomino is near Biasini’s age, but he still is competitive. Elizabeth is the only rider who knows what to do, how to handle him. And, he’s won for her. This season is no different. He’s been all blue in his starts. The only time Tara and I get to ride Eddie is a walk around. It doesn’t seem much. Eddie likes it, we like it. Much of his practice time with Elizabeth is riding around the practice ring at differing speeds, may be a few baby jumps.

The big favor you can do for Biasini is getting yourself fixed and back on the saddle.

Coach Belinda, in the fall, “Okay, Leueen, back on the saddle. You and Biasini had a long enough vacation.”

I smiled a big smile when I red this comment Deborah. I am feeling more positive now. Biasini has no other issues and coming off the Florida season he is in good condition. So his chances of a good recovery are excellent. He is providing some entertainment by getting out of his rain sheet in his paddock. He manages this with all the buckles done up! But I have now added leg straps so that will confound him. I hope.😄

Sounds like Biasini is too smart for his own good, LOL. And, a lot like Elizabeth’s new mare, Lily. She was trying to get out of her winter coat on a cold day. At least she was still inside the barn.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

My husband went out to his paddock to take him for some hand walking and he had the sheet over his head. By the time David got up to him he had it off and was just in his stable sheet. Such a monkey!

When they get to be incorrigible …

Lilith knows how to answer back. Elizabeth tells her, “Don’t take that tone with me, Little Miss.” It’s much too funny when they’re having a “mom-daughter” argument.

I am waiting for surgery to replace my worn out hip socket liner. I had the hip replaced 21 years ago so it is well past it’s best before date. I have asked to be in a cancelation list hoping that will get me in sooner

I hope I will meet you when you come to Ontario.we live North of Toronto. 10 mins from Belinda’s barn and about a hour out of Toronto depending on traffic. Do send me a message to my email when you know when you’ll be here.

We’ll be beginning our medical residencies in late summer, early fall, so our time off will be limited. Our plan is to be in Toronto for the Royal Horse Show. (Is that the proper name?) If it don’t look we’ll have the time off, the better chance will be in early June when we’re in Upstate NY, or when we’re in Traverse City. The jump from Northern Michigan to Toronto doesn’t seem far (famous last words).

Tomorrow is our last day at T-Bird, then we head to Spruce Meadows in Calgary. We’ll have a week off. The spring opener at Spruce Meadows is in two weeks. Fingers crossed on no surprise snow. Riding in Calgary is like riding in Colorado this time of the year. Be ready to ride in snow.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

The Royal is usually at the beginning of November. It’s a lot of fun with lots to see besides the horse show. So I hope you can get a break then. But if you are coming from Michigan sooner just let me know.

Sending giant hugs and healing thoughts and prayers to you and your sweet boy. I’m praying for a full recovery and I’m so happy that his therapy for healing includes a little exercise. It will be therapeutic for his mind and so sweet he can be ridden at the walk and hand walked and grazing. Please give him a hug and carrots from me, Murphy, and Miss Chloe. ❤️🐴🙏🥕🥕🥕

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Today my husband will do the hand walking and then I will give him a hand graze. Miserable wet day here so he may be happy to have a shorter time in his paddock . I will give him those carrots and tell him who they came from!😃

How much you love Biasini comes through loud and clear in your post. I know how distressing horse health issues can be for us as the human caretakers. The watching and the waiting is really hard. And facing our horse’s potential retirement is a tough pill to swallow. However this turns out, Biasini is fortunate to have you as his advocate. Prayers sent.

Oh my, how scary this sounds. Sending healing vibes to both you and your magnificent Biasini. I’m sure he is getting excellent medical care and that he knows he is very much loved. You are smart to keep him moving and to create a new normal routine for him. Animals ( and people ) thrive on routine and need some predictability in their world, and I’m sure Biasini will appreciate the special care and love you and his team offer up. Rooting for you both.

Biasini is my my thoughts and prayers, Anne. Sometimes things just take a while longer to heal with us older folks, and I am in that category, too. Cancer 13 years ago and a heart attack last year. Never give up on anyone! I wish the best for both of you. Biasini is in excellent hands. I can’t think of anyone better than you and your husband and the vet to look after him.

        I Leueen,
I know how that feels. I wish you two a good recovery process. I am in the dame boat. Bust moved to England and my older horse got injured and while examining what was wrong, an underlying older issue became visual. He needs an OP now to become workable again. It happened while the horses were already in England and I was moving the household. I feel like I am loosing the connection to my horses. A terrible thing. I also feel I let him down. I see him struggling with the new surrounding, his body, new people around him, a new ferrier and all ‚old demons‘ are coming back to him and he shows me every day, that he struggles. Part of me feels exactly the same. The pain of moving gets to me the same way. Then my younger horse seems to be ‚the other part‘. He just moves on. Curious and brave he just tries to explore the new environment.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Moving is a huge stress for us humans. And you have moved countries as well. England is a very horsey country so I hope you can get good help with your older fellow. Thanks for your comment. 💕
