Compare and Contrast, Then and Now.

Last weekend my husband and I went to a car show. Some of the cars dated from the 1930s others were newer. As I looked at the cars I started to think about the horses that were replaced by automobiles. This one in the photo above for example, Muscle? Here is real muscle.

Look at this car from the 1950s . No horse could have those colors.

Oh…yes they could! Look at this!

What about this?

A taxi. Back in the day when horses were the only providers of transport they were pulling carriages that were “taxis”.

What about the coaches that took groups of people from one place to another like this colorful bus?

Horses drew “bus” carriages as well .

What about the heavy duty transport like this truck?

I think these horses would have been able to handle heavy loads.

But truth be told I believe that horses are better off now than they were in the days when they were relied upon to transport people and goods. Often they were over worked and underfed and their life was not a good one. I believe that now when horses are mainly used for sport they are better off. In the developing world there are still many equines working in very hard conditions. This is why I support The Brooke. The Brooke is an organisation that helps working equines in many developing countries . It is not a rescue. They educate owners about how to best care for their horses, donkeys or mules. The Brooke knows that entire families rely on their animals. They use local vets, who will speak the language of the owners, and understand the practices of animal care in that country.

Please watch this video. It will give you a good idea of how the Brooke is helping.

I am so grateful for the Brooke. Thanks for reading this post.

Nice comparisons. You never know. The future may be the past.

An interesting ang thought provoking set of images. Why would a horse compete in (what looks to me) his raincoat?

That was for a Special event in Wellington last winter where horse and rider wore costumes for characters from children’s books or films.. I think that one may have been Toy Story..

I loved the comparison of the horses with the automobiles and, while the cars and trucks were pretty snazzy, horses take the prize for beauty, strength, love and companionship. Thank you for posting the video about The Brooke, Anne. It is very moving. If ever there was a cause to support, this is it.

You’re welcome, Anne. I’ll be supporting them . . . and maybe knit a few donkeys too. 😀

On a recent trip to mountains I realized how even there motorized transport has replaced equines. Extreme environments also tend to be the most fragile. Could some climate changes be slowed by bringing equines back to such places?

There are some people who say a return to horses would help and others who say it would not. I think it could help.

Thank you. You are a person who loves and respects animals so this doesn’t surprise me.

A beautifully creative post, Anne! I love the matching colors of the old cars and the horses. One sad part about living in downtown Savanah, beautiful though it is, is the horse-drawn carriages. I cringe every time I hear their distinctive “clop clops” outside our window.

Thank you Neal and I understand your concerns about the carriage horses.

Beautiful post Anne and images worth a mention. Horses are truly better off today. Even though I keep.seeing some in India pulling passengers and vegetables.

I know that India still has many working equines. The Brooke works in India and other countries to help the equines and their owners who depend on them..Thanks for commenting Narayan.
