What do you expect me to do?

“War is at the doorstep. What do you expect me to do?” This is prompt #219 from Reena’s Xploration Challenge. Reena has chosen a challenge that is very timely with the horrific situation in Ukraine.

My son knows people who live in Kyiv. He tells me they are ordinary working people who go out to lunch and buy overpriced salads and on Fridays go for a beer or a sushi dinner after work.

If I was in Kyiv I might wonder, since war is at my doorstep, “what do you expect me to do? ” Should I watch my home be blown up and my family humiliated in the street? Or would I hope my career as a marketing manager has prepared me to be shooting at tanks out of my living room window.

The featured photo for this post says “Long Live an Independent Ukraine” It may be a poster from the original proclamation of independence announcement in 1991.

I pray for a peaceful resolution soon for these people and I give thanks that I do not live there and do not have to make the decision of what I would do.

      I agree. It is bad enough here ( and in my home country Canada) it is hard to imagine the stress of this war.

    “What do you expect me to do?”

    You’ll know what to do when war arrives at your door. Many images have shown well dressed men and women carrying weapons intent on defending their nation. It is not for everyone.

      My son was in Kyiv for working 3 times last year. He is a marketing manager and hence my comment about wondering if a career as a marketing manager would help you fire on approaching Russian tanks. At my age and stage I would probably get ready to defend my country. Why not? I have had a great life. My kids are grown up and independent. I might be able to do something to help even if not with a gun.

    A timely and heartbreaking post Anne. The toll on the ordinary people of Ukraine is so heartbreaking. Mothers leaving their husbands with their young children, People of all ages sheltering in subways, everyday citizens making and planning to use Molotov cocktails against things like planes, bombs and tanks. And through it all glimpses of the madman at the controls. Frightening and tragic.

    I too pray for people in Ukraine. We’ve leaned a lot, maybe too much for enough from the old experience but only handful of people don’t. I also feel bad for my Russian friend. They don’t support Putin’s action but be looked at they’re part of monster just because they have root in Russia. I hope peach is coming back soon.

      It’s a tough situation because I am sure not all Russians support Putin and his invasion..There were thousands of Russians out protesting the invasion on the weekend. I Russia they risk imprisonment for doing this. Clearly they do not agree and want it to stop. Thank you for your comment Tanooki. I too hope peace will not be too long in coming.

    It’s a horrible situation for the people of Ukraine. I read a comment that Putin forgot that the bravest “Russian” soldiers during World War Two were Ukrainian soldiers. I hope they can hold out – they are not just fighting for their own independence but also for way of life that we in the West have taken for granted for the past 70 years or so.

      It is so true Emma. It seems that Putin’s recollection of history is molded to suit his own aims. I hope that history does not repeat itself ( Germany/ Poland/ WWII)

    I guess ordinary people are called so, because they have no control on what is happening. Democracy and voting rights are an illusion, whichever the country.

      In this situation most of us would feel like cowards. I think that in Ukraine they are fighting for their lives.
