La Boiselle (1): clip clop (stay alive)

The ambulance horses …. a poem by Australian poet Frank Prem.

Frank Prem Poetry

the road at La Boiselle392433-small The road at La Boiselle https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/items/1703711

I am
the ambulance

I drive (clip clop)
on pitted paths

the dugouts
beside the road
show that
the war has been

but
I do not fight
I
gather up
the pieces

all
the little
broken
pieces

put them together
beneath a bandage

and hope they’ll heal

while I run
to get another

and I run
to stay alive

then I pack us
all
in the wagon

(clip clop)

(clip clop)

move along

catch my breath

I stay alive
