The Wedding and the Windsor Greys.

Well it was all about the  Royal Wedding today. I did  not get up at 4am to see the full coverage but turned on the TV just in time to see the bride arrive at the church. I loved the ceremony. Actually that is an understatement.  I thought it was FABULOUS!  The address by Reverend Curry, the gospel choir singing Stand By Me. Fabulous.Wonderful. Inspirational.

After the ceremony came the carriage ride through Windsor and here were the horses: the Cavalry Blacks of the Household Cavalry and the Windsor Greys . The Windsor Greys pull the carriages that carry the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.  They get their name from the Victorian times when they were stabled at Windsor.  These horses must be at least 16.1 hands ( 1.65 m) at the withers and have steady temperaments.

I snapped some photos with my phone of the TV screen. The two outrider horses are Plymouth and Londonderry while Milford Haven, Sir Basil , Tyrone and Storm are pulling the carriage.

The outrider horse on the right in this photo was rather excited by the incredible atmosphere. His rider did a masterful job of keeping him on the straight  and narrow and avoiding any complications.

It was a grand day and a source of much joy. I think many of us feel that there is cause for optimism when a African American bishop can close his address on love, at a British Royal Wedding, with a quote from Martin Luther King.

Amen!!

So beautiful! And the horses were the best part of it. I was also thinking of how well they did. Super excited, some more than others…but just wow.. what a job the riders did to keep them calm.

Indeed! They were amazing. One of the greys was a bit over excited but his rider did a brilliant job of keeping him on track. There has been a lot of chat about this in the horse world and everyone realizes how well the rider did and how different it could have been with a less calm and composed rider.

Thank you for snapping the photos and for sharing a rather horsey perspective of the royal wedding. I didn’t know about the Windsor Grey’s, that is so interesting. You are always so informative, I love your blogs! I did not have time to watch the wedding and to see a glimpse and hear about it is fabulous! Thank you! ❤

The Wedding was such a bright spot in a week of bad news ( not in my personal life just in the news news ….school shootings, middle east, volcanos, flooding etc) It was beautiful and very different from other Royal Weddings in the past. I wish them all the best. I’m glad you liked the post and I hope to be going to the Royal Mews to see some of the Windsor Greys when I am in London next week.

I thought that that the Americans brought such freshness to the whole occasion. I loved the Rev Curry. Yes, the horses are always beautiful on this occasions.

I also loved Rev Curry. I think this may have been the most subdued congregation he has ever spoken to. At home he would be used to the congregation calling out “Amen” or “Praise be”. But i don’t think the wedding guests felt they could do that! If I’d been there I would have been tempted to do it! And what about that wonderful gospel choir and Stand by Me. What a brilliant song for a wedding! I loved the whole thing!

I felt tempted to do that too and I was sitting at home watching it on my TV. In fact I think I did say “Amen” at one point!

We noticed a frisky horse, but that was so nice to see.

Yes one of them was a bit frisky and I’m sure his rider was not not happy with that but he handled it very well.

Yes, the horses were incredible! I did notice that some of the riders were posting and some are not. Do you know why?

I am not sure but there are two reasons I can think of. First having to sit the trot on a horse that does not have a comfortable trot is not easy and especially if you will be doing it for a long time it is more comfortable to rise to the trot. Second rising to the trot is easier on the horse’s back if the horse is hard to sit to and also it is more relaxing for the horse.

Yes, I wondered why more weren’t doing it.

I’m also not sure how comfortable those saddles are even though they are sitting on sheepskin pads. I think that it may not be so easy to post to the trot wearing all that gear especially that metal breastplate! So I guess if the horse has a comfortable trot they stay sitting. I’d love to ask them about that.
