Traveller: A Civil War horse.

Horses were used extensively in the US Civil War. for cavalry, artillery , and for many logistical purposes . Traveller was the favorite horse of Confederate General Robert E Lee. He describes him to his wife’s cousin.

” If I was an artist like you, I would draw a true picture of Traveller; representing his fine proportions , muscular figure , deep chest , short back and strong haunches, small head and broad forehead, delicate ears, quick eye and small feet black mane and tail . Such a picture would inspire a poet whose genius could then depict his worth and describe his endurance of toil, hunger, thirst , heat and cold, He could dilate upon his sagacity and affection, and his invariable response to every wish of his rider. He might imagine his thoughts through the long night marches and the days of battle through which he passed. But I am no artist and can therefore only say he is a Confederate grey.

I was helping a local teen with her history homework (WWI) recently, and she couldn’t believe that horses were used during wartime. “But wait,” she kept saying. “What happened to the horses?”

Yes that’s a good question.. thousand were taken to Cairo and had to work in terrible conditions. Dorothy Brook saw them and raised money to buy many of them. This was how the Brooke hospital for animals was started. Now the Brooke is working with horses and working equines all over the world!
