Biasini Speaks: About Snowshoes and other Snow Stuff.

Hello Dear Humans! Ma Leueen tells me that some Humans have been asking if I have snowshoes for going out in the snow. She explained that Humans have big flat things they put on their feet that they call snowshoes. Well mine are not like that. I just have a plastic rim inside the metal of my shoes to stop the snow getting into a big ball and making it impossible for me to walk. And I also have two spikey bits at the heel end of my shoes to give me some traction if it is icy. Here is a photo of the underside of my hoof.

It’s been very cold and icy. But Ma Leueen knew I needed a day off from work in the arena so we went for a walk. It was a VERY cold day. Ma Leueen told me it was -10 C. or 14 F. She told me that Humans reading my blob post would know how cold that was. But Ma Leueen had me wearing my special cold weather sheet that goes over my hind end to keep me warmer. I asked her to take some photos of us out walking but she said no because she would not take off her mittens and have her hands get cold. She said she would take some later of my tracks in the snow. We did not go to the forest as the trails to get to the forest are too icy. We just walked around the paddocks at the front of the farm. Here are some photos she took of my tracks in the snow. In the first one the snow was not too deep.

In this second photo we went one way and then came back so I left two sets of tracks. My hoof prints look pretty neat don’t they.

So I am fairly happy with the winter so far. Me Leueen got me a super blanket for turnout. It covers my neck and I am nice and warm.

I also have a warm blanket for my stall . I have two windows in my stall. I like being able to see out and know who is coming and going. Speaking of coming and going, in the mornings Therapy Human Lori gets me dressed and takes me out to my paddock. She brings Touchie with me . He just goes striding out with his long legs over the ice. I don’t do that. I do NOT want to slip and have an injury. I tell him to slow down but he doesn’t listen. It is tough for TH Lori as Touchie is pulling her ahead and I’m saying: “not so fast”.

All in all things are good. The big Winter Festival is coming up soon I hear. I will get Ma Leueen to put up my blob post about the flying reindeer that I wrote some time ago. Some of you may not have read that one. Till next time Dear Humans!

Thank you for blog post, Biasini! I have a window in my writer’s room where I, too, like to see who’s coming and going. Enjoy!

JD Human I am glad you like seeing out your window to know what is going on outside. I like it very much. Thanks for leaving a comment.🐴

Brrr.. that is a bit chilly Biasini, but I love the hoof prints in the snow and I’m glad your Ma has ways of keeping your warm. Your turn out blanket is BEAUTIFUL and I bet very warm! And thank your Ma for the photo of your hoof with the shoe as I always wondered what was used to keep the ice ball from forming and the cleats or spikey things to help you not slip on ice. The coldest it gets here sometimes is around 30F, it’s rare to get enough ice to stick but I’ve had frosted windshields before if the car isn’t in the garage. We have local mountains that can get really cold like where you live. Anyways, stay warm and so good to hear from you this winter! ❤️☃️

Biasini, you are very brave and smart! Brave to go out when it is icy and yet smart enough not to go too fast. Icy trails scare me a bit. I worry that I might end up sliding down a sand dune. 😏

Have a wonderful week and stay warm.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Irene Human I do hope you will not be slipping down any sand dunes. Maybe you need to get a pair of crampons for your boots. Ma Leueen says they work really well in the ice conditions . You stay warm too. 🐴

      1. Irene Avatar

I didn’t know about crampons but now I’ll be on the lookout for some. Thanks, Biasini and Ma Leueen 😊

Hi Biasini! Your shoes look perfect for your snowy walks. You look great in that warm blanket! I may be getting those big wide snowshoe things for myself soon, now that we’re moved to Eastern Washington. We arrived to snow but it melted for now.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Hello Terri Human! I’m glad you lkme my snow shoes. Maybe if you get more snow you could get the big Human snow shoes.it is a lot of fun to get out I. The snow ❄ 🐴

Thank you for sharing information about your snow shoes Biasini, it’s totally new information for me. Your foot marks on the snow is absolutely beautiful. And above all snow is very fantastic to see. Thanks to Maa for sharing this pictures. It is good to see the same place at different seasons.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

You are most welcome Subbashini Human. Good to hear from you again.

I was very interested in the snow shoes. I am wondering if wild horses with unshod hooves need them?

    1. Emma Cownie Avatar

Rather, does the snow ball up under your hooves because you have horses shoes?

      1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes. It gets stuck inside the metal of the shoe🐴

    2. anne leueen Avatar

No they do not. Biasini has no shoes on his hind hooves . The problem arises from snow balling up inside the metal shoes
It gets quite big and the horse can’t walk properly . Also a bare hoof does not slip as much so no need for the corks.

      1. Emma Cownie Avatar

That’s interesting I never thought about horses only having 2 hooves shod.

Hello Biasini and thank you for sharing your snowy pictures. We don’t get snow where I live so I like to see it especially around the holiday season. So glad you and Ma Leueen are being careful and that she is keeping you warm. I’m wishing you both a lovely holiday and a very happy and safe New Year! And PS. flying reindeer?!?!? You’re making that up!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Tina Human You must know about the flying reindeer. They pull a sleigh, up in the air, with an older man named Klaus in it and he has toys made by elves that he gives to little Humans. I will ask Ma Leueen to put my blob about all that up soon so you will know all about it. Have a happy winter festival !

I am glad you are happy in the snow. I like the beach, but am happy to see the snow in photos 🌞⛱❤

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well Susie Human I will not be going to the South this winter so I have made up my mind to make the best of it and enjoy the snow. It’s not hard and since I have warm things to wear I am pretty happy. Thank you for reading and leaving me a comment. Have a good time at the beach!🐴

        Always, Biasini ❤

Hey Biasini, Glad the snow hasn’t kept you inside. Speaking of cleats, the horses down here have a variety – one for sand, one for grass, three for mud (depends on how thick the mud is), two for ice (one like yours, the other more spikey). For the spikey one, boots are needed. Some cleats are the snap on kind. The mud ones require a ratchet, whatever that is, but has a cool clicky sound. Our farrier uses black color shoes. Stay well, stay warm. Tell your Ma we said “Hi.” Until next time. 🐴🐴🐴

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Hi David! WOW! that is a lot of cork things for your horses. I don’t think we dressage horses have so many. Ma Leueen puts tendon boots on me for turnout and we always ride with either Eskadron warps and polos or fur lined boots for when we are training. I am bare hooves behind. I’ve never had shoes on behind and I’ve never had a problem. I am staying warm enough and I hope you are too. Bye for now and thanks for leaving a comment. 🐴

I am assuming you get a great deal of snow? You are a good momma.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

We get some snow Cigar Human. But not too much. The Humans say we usually get more later in the winter. Thanks for leaving a comment. 🐴

Thank you Xenia Human. I wish you a good weekend too and say hello to Pearl and Eivor. They would love the snow. 🐴

What gorgeous snow! 😀 We never get snow in UK not where I am anyway. Might have the odd little pathetic flurry of sleet trying its best but that’s your lot. Surprised my friend and her horse last night by sneaking over to their yard, switching his stable rug for one Hannah made from old throws, fleeces and crotchet blankets. Super comfy, cosy, pretty and warm as toast.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Wow! Aunty Human that blanket sounds amazing. Too bad you don’t have snow it is nice and I like walking through it. But stay warm anyway!🐴

  14. Robert Parker Avatar

Dear Biasini – I like your shoes, with those spikes, you’d be right in style for a punk rock concert! You’ve reminded me to order something similar for my boots this winter, called “crampons.” And also reminded me of a Sherlock Holmes story, “Priory School,” where the horse wore special shoes, that made cow prints instead, to throw off pursuers.
Glad you’ve got a warm blanket, that looks great, like a stadium coat that humans wear. Stay warm!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you for this comment Robert Human. Ma Leueen has those cramp ons too for the ice. And she told me she loves that Sherlock . I’m glad no one makes my hoof prints look like cow feet.haha! You stay warm too.🐴

  15. violaetcetera Avatar

I see you’re dealing well with the Canadian winter, Biasini. Has your fur been clipped?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I have something called aTrace clip. I have my fur on my legs and back but under my neck and all of my belly is clipped. But Ma Leueen got me blankets that have a belly band to keep me warm. I am still working in the indoor arena so I don’t sweat too much with this clip. Thanks for asking Viola Human 🐴

  16. Robyn Avatar

Hi Biasini! Good to hear from you! I did not know you had special snowshoes and blankets – thanks for letting us know! It looks like Ma Lueen takes good care of you. Enjoy these winter months and stay warm!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Hi Robyn Human! Nice to hear from you again. I agree that Ma Leueen looks after me well. She knows I am used to going to Florida and I don’t like to be cold. You stay warm too!🐴

A nice informative post with lovely images.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Rapali Human. I like to give Humans a better understanding of we horses.🐴

      1. Rupali Avatar

        Appreciate it.

  18. Megala Avatar

    Hi Biasini!
It is so nice to see you wearing snowshoes & warm blankets. We, humans, would like to take hot liquids like soup, etc. to keep ourselves warm during winter. I am just curious to know whether you also like to take hot liquids in this biting cold winter.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Hello Megala Human! I’m glad you like my snowshoes and my blankets. We horses do not have hot things to eat or drink. Our food is soaked in warm water so it is nice and mushy but by the time we are eating it the food is not warm. That’s ok for we horses!🐴
