Australian poet Frank Prem’s words take us to the bleakness of WW1 for both the horses and the soldiers.
Artillery horses moving along the tree lined road between Poperhinghe and Ypres, during the Third Battle of Ypres. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C953158?image=1
and the fallen
slowly
ride
their steeds
point
to valhalla
once proud
and upright
they slump now
in their saddles
they are surely dead
even if
alive
at least
on this ride
there are tall trees
and shade
at least
this ride
is safe
and see
they keep coming
this parade
runs
forever
is there room
enough
do you think
will heaven hold
them all
no bombs
no bullets
no shells
from above
let none disturb
the bugle
as it calls
~
good one…nice share

Thank you re-blogging this piece, Anne. I’ve said it before, but I find these pictures both very moving and quite inspiring.

Nice poem. Of WW1
But the link to the original Post shows that the post doesn’t exist.

Hmm…that is odd. I reblogged it from the original site so I don’t know why it is not working.

I have tried the link to the original post via my site and it worked. If you click on the link at the bottom of the poem it should work.

Anne, I apologise. I think I created the problem because I changed a word in the title – from march to ride. I think I messed the link up doing so. Try this one: https://wp.me/p7yTr8-78x if there are any problems.
I should have left well enough alone 😦

I clicked on ‘original post” at the bottom of the poem and it went to the right place. One of the mysteries of the ethernet I guess. But thanks for this extra link.
