A small foal who died some 42,000 years ago has been found in the Batagaika crater in Yukutia , Northern Russia. The perfectly preserved remains of the foal are thought to be the long extinct Lenskaya horse. The foal is perfectly preserved due to having been buried in mud which then froze and has remained frozen for millennia.

Horses have been with us for tens of thousands of years. Another proof of this is the cave drawing in the Chauvet Cave in France.

These very artistic paintings show us that horses were a source of inspiration for artists 30,000 years ago.

Horses and humans have journeyed together for …. who knows how long?
That’s incredible.

Maybe man and woman’s best friend was originally a horse.

Anne – fascinating! Mark – quite possible! at the risk of sounding stupid – just wondering as I haven’t had good fortune of being with horses – are their personalities much like those of dogs?

Horses all have individual personalities so in that respect they are much like dogs. The main difference is that horses are prey animals and dogs and humans are predators. We are a natural pairing with dogs but not with horses. It is one of the amazing things about horses that they agree to bond with us and form relationships. Horses are also not usually kept in the house with us and I am grateful for that as I would not want my horse to be getting into bed with me.😄

I read elsewhere that scientists are trying to clone this foal using tissue from his body.

I have also seem this. I chose not to mention it in this post as they would have to do the cloning with another horse still in existence. There are some horses that are close descendants but even if the succeed the horse that would result would not be the same as the little foal. However I feel sure they will make some efforts. I think that they are trying to do some cloning to preserve something of the rhino that is now extinct so the technology is already in the works.

I have mixed feelings about the cloning business…some times I think scientists muck about with stuff to enhance their reputations rather than to improve the world.

I agree. Scientists and politicians are more interested in their own careers being furthered than in what is int he best interest of the people or in this case the animals . But don’t get me started on the politicians thing……!!!!
