This little black squirrel has picked up a seed that was dropped by the birds at the feeder above him The squirrels cannot get up the pole to the feeders, it is wrapped in metal, as you can see.

I’ve never seen such a dark-coloured squirrel before!

We have black and grey squirrels here.

That is most interesting! Are they species in their own right, or just differently coloured to the “usual” squirrels?

To be honest I don’t know if they are different species. I do know that they don’t inter breed so perhaps they are different species.

Just to add that we also have smaller red squirrels. They are noticeably smaller and must be a unique species. They also are much more vocal and go partway up trees and turn to chatter at something on the ground. Also if they get into your attic they chew wiring and can be very destructive. The bigger grey and a black squirrels are not interested in getting into attics.

Thanks, Anne! That is very interesting!

Smart squirrel! It appears it is paying off for him/her – a healthy looking one. 😊

I have to say that all the squirrels that eat the dropped seeds look in good form. None of them are thin or mangy looking.

Survival of the fittest, I suppose.

And we have snow and severe cold here in the winter. They have to survive that!!

            Makes perfect sense! 😁

My platform feeder is 55 inches above the ground. One of our black squirrels has become quite adept at outsmarting the metal sleeve around the post and bypassing the metal shield beneath the platform feeder. He, she is like Keanu Reeves in the matrix movies.
The squirrel takes a running, start at the feeder. Bounces off the metal shield under the feeder, and still having upward momentum pushes itself off the metal shield towards the outer edge of the platform on the feeder. Grabs the outer edge with its tiny little claws just before it completely ejecting itself away from the platform feeder, and then climbs on top of the feeder.

Oh my! None of ours have managed.onge up our pole. It’s about 6 ft so that’s a lot of pole even if they try to run and jump up onto it.

What a lucky and patient little lady or fellow.

You have successfully outsmarted them! Our game is still on, lol

We have two feeders that are on a 2×4 piece if wood at the top of the pole. The metal is wrapped around the pole and the squirrels cannot get a grip on it. If they did there would be nothing left for the birds.

I know. Ours are quite adept at finding a different approach.

It’s great to see black one; we don’t get them over here! We often see the birds on the feeders pecking through the feed to get the bits they want; the pigeons `& squirrels are always happy to be on clean-up below 😂

We have equal numbers of black and grey here. The mourning doves and also red wing blackbirds clean up below.

We only have red squirrels in this part of Ireland but I am yet to see one!

We have grey and black here and farther north there are red squirrels that are smaller.
