What do I miss most?

If you follow this blog you will know I am not able to ride due to a hip injury and having worn out my 20 year old replaced right hip. Since riding is a huge part of my life not being able to ride has brought up some interesting things in my psyche.

There are lots of things you can do with a horse besides riding. I am so lucky to have two highly qualified professionals ride my Biasini while I am “off”. Monday to Friday I go to the barn and groom him and get him tacked up for either my coach Belinda Trussell or her assistant trainer Lynsey Rowan. Then I watch them ride. As I am watching I am well aware of how well they deal with Biasini’s idiosyncrasies. Biasini goes around the arena in an ideal frame and that in itself is not so easy to achieve. I know this because I have ridden him for eight years. Then when I see them performing test movements , like the zig zag from the Intermediare 1,that is when I know I am watching advanced professional riders.

But what do I miss the most since I still have lots of contact with Biasini especially after he is ridden when I give him another grooming and do his carrot stretches with him, get his stable blanket on and put him back into his stall. What I miss is the challenge of being in a program of learning and working toward new goals. I enjoy preparing for a show season and working on the test movements. I actually enjoy working hard . And I miss being in a program and having goals to work toward. But is that what I miss most?

Here is a short video that Lynsey took when she had Biasini and her dog Murphy out on the snowy trails in the forest.

If something is stressing me in my life I take Biasini out on a forest trail ride and I can feel the stress lifting away from me with every stride he takes. If I am not able to do that I have found it tough to find anything else that succeeds so well in dissipating stress. There is always stress in life. I’m not unusual in suffering from stress from time to time. But since I am not able to ride I am much more aware of it. So I would have to say that my forest trail rides are the thing I miss most.

Leueen, I get it and totally agree. There is nothing like a trail ride with no goal in mind other than looking around and relaxing. If I know you, I bet you are working your way back to riding! Have a happy Christmas Leueen! Give Biasini an extra carrot from his old friends in Florida 🤗!

Thank you Laura! We are coming to Florida December 27 and arrive by the 30th. We should try to meet up. We will be in Wellington.

Forest trails always looked to be the most relaxing part of your horse experience. It’s really tough doing without the independence (in this case riding) we once had. I just hope you can think of a way around it all.

Thank you Emma. I know you have had some time sidelined when you broke your leg. We leave for Florida December 27 and that will make a difference. Warmer weather for one thing. 😃

Healthy activities that take our mind off of stress are vital. I am sorry these opportunities are missing from your life right now. Will you be able to in the foreseeable future? The video is delightful. Thanks for sharing.

Once I get the surgery to repair the hip I will be abe to ride. What I have to wait for is the hip fracture must heal first..so I need to be patient

You seem a patient person, but I am sure it is difficult when you can’t do what you love. Sorry. Having sustained a major injury years ago, I know how challenging it can be. Sure did teach me some things.

I’m so sorry that you’re unable to ride at the moment. I had a bad injury almost 10 years ago where I was kicked in the head and chest by a horse. I was out for months! Here’s to a full and speedy recovery and return to riding. Happy holidays ❤️

Thank you so much for this comment. My hip cn be surgically repaired. I just need to wait until the fracture in that hip heals up. I’m sure you know what it’s like to have to wait to get back to riding.

You’re very welcome ❤️It’s excruciating! How much longer do you have until the fracture is healed?

I don’t know. I get another xray on April17. Also when we are in Florida I’m going to get a CT scan. The surgeon here said a CT scan could show more but it is a long wait to get one. So far the healing has been slow .

Oh no…I’m praying for you. I’m so sorry that you have to go through this. I can’t imagine what you’re going through right now

It may sound odd but I been through worse. I’m a survivor and I will finally get the surgery and get back riding. Thank you for the prayers I appreciate them very much.

I believe in you! ❤️ of course! From one rider to another, I understand how hard it is not to be able to ride and seeing other people ride your horse instead of you and having fun. Even though it’s nice to watch them get worked, it’s just not the same.

There is something about a ride in the snow. The ones I remember most were on a clear full moon lit trail, enjoying the silence of the snow…

    1. anne leueen Avatar

A ride in moonlight would be magic!

It hurts when you miss a fine activity…though you still have a fine horse.

That looks amazingly beautiful ❤️Can you walk with the horse through the woods…along side him rather than ride ?
The connection to animals and nature is like nothing else as you know.❤️🙏prayers for your wellness my friend

Thank you for this comment. Unfortunately my hip does not do well with walking longer distances and also with walking at the pace I would need to keep up with Biasini. But it would be a great idea. Thank you for the prayers. Much appreciated.

Of course you do. Give him an extra cuddle 🥰

I’m sorry, I miss hiking in the woods, too, whenever I’m not able to. I don’t know where in Ontario you live, but any chance you can bundle up and go on a sleigh ride? I haven’t gone on any, but I remember seeing ads for some big farms that offer that in Canada. I know it’s an enormous province so might be a drive to get there.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

A sleigh ride! That is a good idea. I will look into that. Thank you!

I’m so sorry you can’t take rides in the forest or arena right now. I hope you recover soon so you’ll be able to get back out there *big hugs*

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Lillian . I am waiting for surgery to replace the worn out socket liner of my right hip. I will get that done in the spring and then I will be back riding!
