Water water everywhere!

The weather has been hot, hot, hot and the birds both big and small have been grateful for the bird baths. It is the first time I have seen one of the mourning doves in the bird bath having a splash.

At first I saw this dove in the bath and it was taking a drink.

And then whoosh in it went for a splash!

This American Goldfinch came for a drink but did not feel the need for a bath.

We also have one on the ground.

Which birds go in the one on the ground?

        1. anne leueen Avatar

The doves go to the ground one to drink. And the squirrels like the ground one for drinking. If we get crows they use it as well.

Sometimes I worry about doves. I would think they are easy pickings for predators. One morning in the winter I went to feed the birds in the back and 3 doves were sitting at my sliding glass door waiting, although they looked like they slept there.

We do have hawks here but I have never seen one take a swoop at the doves or squirrels. In the garden at the back of the house a hawk got a chipmunk once. But that was in mid winter . Interesting about your doves.

I can not always tell what the hawks are catching. I know when an owl or hawk is in the immediate area the blue jays go nuts. They warn everyone in the area of danger. I used to think blue jays were annoying, but now I think they are like the burglar alarm system of the woods.
