Is the candle flickering?

I have a candle burning in my chest. If it starts to flicker I know I need to work on myself.

Janne Rumbough

With being somewhat laid up with my hip fracture and an uncertain future ahead with the replaced part of the hip wearing out. I have found myself falling into a less positive mindset. I re-read an interview with Janne Rumbough that I did in 2019. It was titled “Don’t let the old Gal in.” Do take a minute to read it .

When I came to the end and read what Janne said about the candle in her chest I realized my candle was flickering. So….I must work on myself. How can I do that? I am doing my best to maintain my fitness. I always do the Eldergym classes and now I can do the Chair classes. These all are done seated. This works perfectly for me. And although they are all done seated there is still a good bit of exercise.

I also do my physio exercises twice a day. This past week my physiotherapist had me use an anklet band with 1 lb. weight in it. Not much weight but even the 1lb does make a difference.

But the most important aspect of keeping that candle burning bright is my mind set. How do I address that? Well that’s the tricky part. This coming Tuesday I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon who replaced both of my hips. He now is no longer doing surgery himself but still does consults at a hospital in the city. I want to find out what can be done about the socket part of my replaced right hip that is wearing out.

Until I get some news on that I just have to remind myself that I am very lucky. Recently I have done interviews with 3 Para equestrians. Two of them are Paralympians. They had some huge physical and mental hurdles to overcome. My problems are minor by comparison so if they could do it, I can do it.

I can feel my candle burning brighter already!

Hopefully you are healing nicely ❤️your awareness of your mindset is something to be very proud of. It is self care at its finest -you are aware when “your candle is flickering “ as you say. That is brilliant and I will also use myself now. ❤️💜❤️

I’m glad you got a good report regarding your hip, and when you can return to riding. I’m sure Biasini has learned some things from Coach Belinda and Coach Lynsey that he is eager to show you. And, the jumping he did with Coach Belinda’s daughter.

Yes that surgeon told me it was up to me to decide when to get back on Biasini. So today I see my physio and will discuss getting off the walker and using a cane for starters.

I am so happy your candle is not flickering any more! Yes, it takes work for it not to flicker!
I had to work on my self too, for it not to burn out 😂 !
Hope you can have your hip replaced or repaired, so you will be able to ride again! That was so kind of you to quote me! Best wishes to be better all the way around. 🥰 be well and safe!

I saw the surgeon who replaced both of my hips yesterday and he said the fracture has healing happening and the replace hip , even though it is 19 years old does not need anything at the moment. So all that is good news. He said that I could decide when I feel confident enough to get back to riding . He said I have to walk without the walker and then use a cane and when I can be confident with no cane and I feel good about riding again I should just go for it. He will follow up with me in September. By then I think I’ll be riding! 😀

Hello Anne, I’m sorry I haven’t been around for a while. We moved house and I took a break from blogging because there was so much to do.

It really can be soul destroying as we get older with all that it entails. It’s good to know that you’re doing all you can and seeking help for your physical issues. I’ve got pulmonary sarcoidosis and rheumatoid arthritis, but have not been through any major ops like you have. I know how low pain can bring you though, so I hope the outcome is hopeful for your appointment on Tuesday.

Thank you for this comment. I appreciate hearing from you. RA is a serious condition. One of the Canadian Paralympians has RA.. I don’t know how she is able to ride but she is in a category that means she doesn’t have to do trot and canter work in her tests. Anyway I wish you all the best. I will post about the surgeon’s meeting tomorrow. Thanks again!🙂
