This spring, at the plant nursery, I asked for a climbing vine. The only one they had was a bougainvillea. I got it , planted it up against a West facing wall and hoped for the best. I have to say it has really surprised me it has done so well. It is a wonderful splash of color to look at on our back deck.

So beautiful. Makes me long to be back in South Africa, where we had the most beautiful bougainvillaeas. Here in New Zealand, they don’t do so well because of the climate.
It does well here only in the summer. Come the autumn t will die back .

I hope it’s the thornless one – I once had to trim an overgrown bougainvillea, and I still bear the scars.

A beautiful and hearty plant. They are messy, but I love them.
I will put up with messy for that blat of tropical color on our deck.
