Don’t Even Go There!

“I have a horse.” I said to the orthopedic surgeon.

Don’t even go there!” He said with a serious look. “When you come back in seven weeks and this fracture has completely healed we can talk about how to get you back on a horse.

This was how my day started at the hospital Fracture Clinic. In a way I was not surprised. I could see the xray of my hip on the computer screen. I could see that fracture. The surgeon said it was not big and should heal. Then he went on to tell me that the hip joint , which was replaced 19 years ago, was showing wear and would need to be redone. That was worse news. I have had too many surgeries already and I was not in the mood for hearing I needed another one. However, this hip has been giving me lots of issues with the connective tissue. And most of these issues have been affecting my riding. So if I got the joint redone it would probably be a good thing . That is the logical part of my brain speaking. But the emotional side of my brain was feeling down.

“Well at least you are not saying I can never ride again.” I said looking up at the surgeon. “If you told me that I would tell you that I would need a room in the Clark booked now.” He laughed . The Clark is a mental hospital where those who are suffering from serious mental illness are sent. I like the fact that he laughed and showed he appreciated my sense of humor even if it was a bit dark.

Let’s put this into perspective.

  • It is only a 7 week wait and this may seem long but it will pass.
  • It is my hip that has a small fracture not my heart.
  • I have close friends who have been dealing with serious cancer illness that could take their lives. I just have a minor fracture in my hip.
  • The hip will mend and if I need a new joint I will get one.
  • Nothing in any of this is life threatening.
  • I have good upper body strength so walking with a walker for another 7 weeks will not be a problem.

So there you have it. Those are my thoughts for Tuesday,July 12, 2022.

I will be back on Biasini and out on the forest trails again some time in the future. Perhaps in time to see these autumn colors.

So glad to hear you are in good hands Anne and your orthopaedic surgeon wants to help you get back in the saddle too. I know many people who were not able to ride again for one reason or another and they found new ways to stay actively involved with horses. The horsey community is like a big family and there are so many ways you can contribute, be around horses and make a positive contribution. Wishing you all the best with your next operation and please give sweet Biasini a big pat from us all 🤗🧡🐴 xxx

.her on Biasini. Thanks for your lovely comment 😀

Your comment about the Clark reminded me of something a fellow rider with hip issues said in a casual conversation. It was, “If I ever get to the place that I can’t ride anymore, please take me out to the pasture and shoot me”. Not sure which would be better, a mental institution or quick death in a pasture?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I’d go for the quick death! Just kidding..I would find a different way to be involved with horses and avoid death and mental institutions. If 🙂

The “like” button seems wrong here. It is understandable that you are disappointed. On the other hand, you are correct that things will get better. Still…it is tough news. Hang in there!

I love how you put it into perspective- ♥️ Some times I have had to find the blessing in “what appears to be a mess”. I hope you enjoy your healing and hugging your horse until you can ride again ❤️💜❤️

Thank you. I do enjoy going to the barn and watching my coach ride or her assistant trainer have a lesson on my horse. They are both such excellent riders that it is a joy to see how amazingly well my horse responds to them.

Bitte sehr gerne , Please feel free, in general you have pernettle or horsetail outdoors, all of the herbs protect and strengthen human tissue + more protoen-containing foods, everything will be fine, everything is fine.

I echo Suzette’s comments. I know this is not an easy situation for you. Plenty of frustrations abound, I am sure. And yet you model for us how to not see a difficult situation as all bad. I see your hope and all the good things you have to look forward to.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I’m sure you can understand how frustrating this is but there is no use in just falling into a black hole of despair. I feel better if I can look for some positive things in this situation,.

Anne, Sorry to hear about your fracture. Sounds like a full recovery is likely even if you go for surgery. You grabbed my attention with this post because my husband fractured/shattered his shoulder while we were on vacation in Yellowstone. It was a difficult air plane ride back to Florida for surgery. He has a 9 inch rod in his arm and recovery will be slow, very slow. Claudia

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I think we need a great deal of patience to recover from these injuries. Give your husband my best wishes for a complete recovery .

      1. claudiajustsaying Avatar

I will. Previously I was reluctant to share personal challenges, but I’m glad I have. Your words bring me comfort. Thanks

  19. Judy Avatar

I went home a cried the day my physical therapist, because of my back, told me I could never ride again. Looking forward to you being back in the saddle, once you’re fully healed!

      Thank you Judy!
