“I have a horse.” I said to the orthopedic surgeon.
“Don’t even go there!” He said with a serious look. “When you come back in seven weeks and this fracture has completely healed we can talk about how to get you back on a horse.
This was how my day started at the hospital Fracture Clinic. In a way I was not surprised. I could see the xray of my hip on the computer screen. I could see that fracture. The surgeon said it was not big and should heal. Then he went on to tell me that the hip joint , which was replaced 19 years ago, was showing wear and would need to be redone. That was worse news. I have had too many surgeries already and I was not in the mood for hearing I needed another one. However, this hip has been giving me lots of issues with the connective tissue. And most of these issues have been affecting my riding. So if I got the joint redone it would probably be a good thing . That is the logical part of my brain speaking. But the emotional side of my brain was feeling down.
“Well at least you are not saying I can never ride again.” I said looking up at the surgeon. “If you told me that I would tell you that I would need a room in the Clark booked now.” He laughed . The Clark is a mental hospital where those who are suffering from serious mental illness are sent. I like the fact that he laughed and showed he appreciated my sense of humor even if it was a bit dark.
Let’s put this into perspective.
- It is only a 7 week wait and this may seem long but it will pass.
- It is my hip that has a small fracture not my heart.
- I have close friends who have been dealing with serious cancer illness that could take their lives. I just have a minor fracture in my hip.
- The hip will mend and if I need a new joint I will get one.
- Nothing in any of this is life threatening.
- I have good upper body strength so walking with a walker for another 7 weeks will not be a problem.
So there you have it. Those are my thoughts for Tuesday,July 12, 2022.
