Odds and Ends: Lens Artists Challenge #189

15th Century spurs at Wallace Collection London. My reflection in the glass.

This week the Lens Artists Challenge is Odds and Ends from Tina of Travels and Trifles

This is an odd end on that 15th Century foot armour and that is one heck of a spur. Wallace Collection London.
The London Shard has a sharp end seen through the ancient stones on the roof of the White Tower .
Boughton House ,home of the Duke of Buccleuch, has records showing they had 5,970 nails in the budget for December 31st. 1739. and 3,664 horse shoe nails.
These masks have nothing to do with the Pandemic. This is Vietnam before Covid was even thought of. This is to prevent any sun getting onto the skin of these women.
An odd entanglement of wires in Ho Chi Minh city.
My Grandson at the end of the soccer season for summer 2021. Each child got a small toy soccer ball and a medal.

    Interesting collection. Cute grandson.

Can you even imagine keeping records in that manner now, let alone records for nails? Donna

Thanks for commenting. I agree about the record keeping. “Nails” I suppose that at that time nails were essential and had to be accounted for . Also they may have been expensive so had to be registered in the budget.

Yes. And hard to make. It’s funny how half the time we lose them, or just stick them in a junk drawer because they are in the way.

Wow interesting! The one about “mask” looks familiar to me…I saw my neighbors equipped just like them when they’re gardening or even at a beach, who came with their children as a chaperon😂

It seems to me that in Vietnam and Cambodia women do not want to have any sunburn or darkening of their skin. No suntans! Maybe your neighbours are the same.

      1. Tanooki Avatar

Yes you’re exactly right! We believe suntans/sunburns triggers to skin cancer or extra wrinkles later on😁

So glad to see your proud grandson here. Great selections, Anne.
The record of the Boughton House is precious. The wires in Ho Chi Minh city, odd and complicated. 🙂

Thanks Amy .My Grandson really enjoyed his time in the summer soccer club.

Great post, it says, why we have to take photographs.

    Interesting odds and ends, Anne.

      Thank you VJ

My daughters would have a hard time walking with those kind of spurs. Plus, I can’t imagine a noble using those kind of spurs and cruel bits on their favorite horses.

The entanglement of wires, I’d hate to be the line technician. 🙂

I agree with you about the spurs and the bits and the wires in Ho Chi Minh city! What a tangled web that is.

Great collection, Anne! Those long spurs were really something…love your wholecollection, but I think my favourite must be the wires and your grandson’s strange medal.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Ann Christine! Yes those wires were so bizarre!

  8. Diana Avatar

Great post!! Your grandson is AWW-dorable!! 💙

Thank you. He is a cute little fellow and a bit of an imp that makes him very entertaining.

A fascinating collection of photos, Anne! Nice reflection. 😀
Were spurs just for decoration or were they actually used on the horses?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I think they may have been used but they were so excessive that it would have injured the horse. So perhaps they were not used too much.

Great shot of the Shard, nice perspective through the battlements.

Thanks for commenting. I was on the roof of the White Tower with a group and that perspective just jumped out at me. Forgive me if I have already replied to your comment. I thought I had but do not see on WP that I replied.

Excellent set of odds and ends Anne – loved your horse items and the trivia about the nails. Can you imagine? And of course the women in masks in Vietnam – way ahead of their time! Thanks so much for joining us this week.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Tina for the challenge. Yes the nails…who had to count those nails or did they just guess? Here in Florida I still see women with tans on their faces and bodies and I think of how hard people in other parts of the world try not to get any color on their skin . Thanks for your comment.

      1. Tina Schell Avatar

LOL you’re right on that Anne. Here on Kiawah those of our vintage are busy protecting ourselves from the sun while the younger generations still sunbathe daily. Go figure!

        1. anne leueen Avatar

I wear minimum 40 protection factor sun screen every day. And a hat as well and long sleeved tropic wear shirts here in Florida. My daughter who is 34 has had a few bits cut out of her shoulders already so she is now wary and keeps the kid in shirts and sunscreen .

          1. Tina Schell Avatar

Me too Anne. I guess the 20-something’s think we’re crazy. I remember the days of baby oil and no protection, may the darkest tan win LOL

  12. JohnRH Avatar

Great selections Anne. I suspect they were ‘less kind’ to their horses way back then. Good POV on the Shard.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you John. There is no doubt that the “old days” saw horses treated badly with cruel bits and spurs. Thanks for commenting!
