Megan Lane: Back in the Competition Arena!

Last year some Canadians still came to Florida to compete despite Covid. But for various reasons others did not. Canadian Olympian Megan Lane was one who did not. I recently had a chance to ask her a few questions about how it feels to be back in 2022 competing at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival.

1. How does it feel to be back in 2022 in the Florida horse show season?

It feels great to be back in the routine of competing and qualifying again. For nearly two years competitions were either postponed or cancelled altogether due to the pandemic, this of course made setting and achieving goals very difficult.

2. You had a frustrating disappointment in not being considered an “essential” person at the US/Canada border when you were on your way to a show at Tryon that could have been part of your qualifications for the Canadian Olympic Dressage team for Tokyo.

Qualifying for Tokyo in the height of COVID was indeed very challenging. Tryon was necessary for qualification but due to the discretion/not unified protocols at the border it was, in my case, not possible.

3.You and Belinda Trussell are both now training with Debbie Macdonald. Can you tell me how that came about?

At the CDI recently Belinda Trussell( white cap) and Debbie Macdonald (speaking into the Cee Coach mic) were there to help Megan with her warm up for her Grand Prix test. On the left in this photo is Evelyn, Megan’s groom!

Our collaboration with Debbie became possible after her retirement from her position as US Team Coach. Prior to leaving for Florida we had spoken about the idea of taking a few lessons but after our first lesson we gained so much that we felt it would be smart to capitalize on the opportunity to work together with her.

4.Are you aiming for the World Championships this August in Herning?

Yes, my goal this year is to compete Zodiac at the World Championships.

At the end of the Grand Prix test Megan is happy with how it went .

5.What can you tell me about your horse Zodiac?

Zodiac will be 18 this year. Something about him that makes me laugh is to see is how excited he gets when he travels. He seems to know when it’s his turn to go and when he sees the trailer pull up he will repeatedly neigh softly in anticipation until someone gets his halter on. He will sometimes get so excited when he sees the trailer that you have to slow him down as he approaches the ramp and once he is loaded he is very pleased.

Thanks so much Megan for taking the time to speak with me. All the best for the rest of the winter season here in Florida.

The pirouette.

Megan would also like to give special thanks to Deer Ridge Equestrian and team for their dedication and Omega Alpha for their generous and ongoing support of Deer Ridge’s team horses and upcoming stars.

If I’m not riding at least I can read about it! I’m trying to do an on-line Dressage Training Program to improve my core strength. I was doing really well but my shoulder and arm have flared up again giving me pain. I’m still hopeful that Biscuit and I will get back together soon. It has been very hot weather here so looking for a cooler day for a catch up!

I’m happy to give you a way to stay in the horse community while you are not riding.

Many thanks Anne. Maybe I should write some posts about horses I had as a child even if that is self-indulgent.

I’m guessing by Megan’s smile, she’s glad to be back in competition. Good for her to be enjoying herself.

When it comes to COVID, we still could be doing more. Be more proactive, more aggressive in keeping everyone well. The Winter Olympics in Beijing, due to start this week, is the prime example of not having a handle on any of this.

The 21 season proved you can compete safely during a pandemic, but a competitor has to manage and oversee their own protection program. You just cannot depend on the FEI, show management, the venue, and the local jurisdiction to do the work for you. They have their own agendas. Florida has done so little when it comes to safety protocols, so there is a risk consideration. Teams and individuals have handled it differently. For ourselves, we ran our own program with frequent testing (every 2-3 days), knowing the vaccines only provide limited protection (less sick). We go everywhere wearing a mask, even now.

Back to horses, how many horses did Megan and Belinda bring down to Florida? I know jumpers will travel with maybe 2 or 3. If they bring only one, a more “selective” schedule is on the board to give the horse days off.

I don’t know how many horses Megan came down with but Belinda has 3 . She has 9 horses from her barn in Canada here for the winter with their owner/ riders. My husband and I always wear masks and we only get take out and do not eat in restaurants . At the barn we are in the same “bubble” we were in at home and the barn is very open so I think that is pretty safe. We are all triple vaccinated and I know that is not foolproof but it is supposed to help at least.
