Olympian pretending to be a horse?

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new!

Socrates

When I was a kid I used to pretend to be a horse. I would be cantering around the living room and occasionally rearing up like the Lone Ranger’s horse Silver! But I don’t do too much of that now. However… my coach Belinda Trussell uses pretending to be a horse as a method of teaching . Yes!

This past week I was really struggling in my lessons. I just could not accomplish what Belinda wanted. Belinda does not mince her words so I heard a few “It’s not good enough!” and “I’m not seeing anything.” After the second lesson of the week I felt discouraged. But on Friday for the last lesson of the week I knew I had to buck up and get it together.

I still did not seem to be able to produce what Belinda wanted. I had Biasini is a good frame but when I asked for the collected canter I would loose activity in his hind end. Not good enough. So Belinda asked me to take a break. Then she did her imitation of a horse cantering like Biasini. She had her arms and legs in canter timing and motion but was tipped forward from the waist. She told me that was not what she wanted. Then she stood upright and cantered again. Now she was upright, on the vertical, and her knees were coming up in front of her. A whole different picture. This was what she wanted to see. I picked up the reins and asked for the canter. Biasini did not give me the activity I knew we needed. I gave him a swift kick and he bounced forward. I collected that energy and in my mind, I saw Belinda and her uphill cantering. BOOM! Biasini sat down behind and came up in his shoulder without loosing any of the energy.

I am sorry I do not have any video of this transformation or of Belinda pretending to be a horse. All I can say is ….it worked!

Going forward I must follow the advice of Socrates and focus my energy on building the new, the look and feeling that Belinda had shown me when she was pretending to be Biasini.

I have given you a photo of Whistlejacket’s portrait painted by George Stubbs. He has the energy and the uphill balance. Not all four hooves on the ground but hey…. the idea is there. And one more thing. This post is my response to Debbie @ Travel with Intent’s Six Word Saturday Challenge. Just the title has to be six words not the whole post. Check out some of the other responses!

Some of my riding school students have captured me in various pretending-to-be-the-horse poses while trying to film their rides. I have ruined many a good photo or video with my lunacy, but it definitely helps the kids ride better!

My coach says it is almost impossible to video and teach at the same time. I love the idea that you also pretend to be a horse. It works!

A beautiful painting and a wonderful quote Anne, it would have been great to see Belinda pretending to be a horse! It’s something we used to do at our riding school and brought back happy memories. Wishing you lots of fun with this going forward! 🤗🧡🐎 xxx

Some eons ago I saw a post of yours that contained a video of you collecting Biasini’s canter before asking for a smooth transition to walk. I could easily see the collection, so I know that sometime in the past you had it. It just fell along the road somewhere. Good to see you picked it up!

What happened is that Belinda raised the bar….again! Now she wants that very collected canter but she wants MORE activity and MORE energy in it,especially in his hind legs. So I can collect him to a pirouette canter without trouble but I struggle with maintaining all that energy and activity. However the visual of Belinda
cantering helped as when I had a picture of that in my mind the energy and acitvity were easier to maintain. Whew!

Great advice! I’ve always wanted a horse ever since I was a little girl. I never got one, but I remember my love of horses. 🙂

Thanks Lisa . I think we all loved horses as kids and I was lucky enough to have them in my life.

I am glad I am not the only person who cantered around being a horse as a child!

I am glad to hear you did that when you were a kid!😀

The advice is so so profound yet simple, focusing on building the new automatically forces our mind to think forward. Brilliant, thankyou 👏

Wonderful mind picture Anne! My blog has been neglected for the past six weeks due to an unfortunate fall I had off a horse! I had ridden this horse four times before and never any hint of anything assembling a pigroot or undesirable behavior. I had groomed, rugged, saddled up, tied up, fed, seen shod and handled this lovely boy several times. Soft mouth and gentle to ride. He has been used as a beginner’s horse. His owner was really pleased how well Biscuit and I were working together. She said I had a good seat and good hands which was pleasing to hear. I was honest about not being on a horse for several years so we were being really sensible about me getting back in the saddle again. We were out for a quiet ride on country roadside with two other riders. Just walking. We jumped a small culvert and as we landed, I felt his back end go up in a buck and silly me hadn’t settled back into the saddle quick enough to avoid coming off. Although it was totally out of character for him, I just think there is so much green spring feed around at present and he just got excited after our little jump. I landed very heavily on my right side. At first I thought I was just winded and was going to get back on, but as I started to black out, maybe that wasn’t going to happen. Any way, the upshot was four cracked ribs, a broken scapula (shoulder blade) and an injured right arm. Slowly healing but still painful. While I feel silly coming off like that, it was probably better to happen now rather than later. I still hope to bring him home to my place and get back into riding when I have fully recovered. It is the first time I have ever broken bones from falling off a horse. Well done on your achievement with your mount! I’m not sure if I should pretend to be the horse next time I ride Anne!

So sorry to hear you had this mishap. When I was a kid I fell off a lot but then I bounced back. Now I know I would not bounce back so I do my best to stay on. I know Biasini very well . We have been together for 7 years now. So I know when he is about to spook or have a funny turn. Take your time to recover and mend those bones.

What a wonderful long-time bond to have with Biasani Anne. I was trying so hard to gradually get back into having a horse and looking for that bond. He was suppose to come to my house to live that week but that is on hold until I mend. I was going to spend time with Biscuit ( he is a 15.2 hands Palomino part quarter horse) every day so we could get to know each better. Many thanks for your kind words. I am acutely aware of time passing so quickly and so want to spend some of that time with a special horse.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

I hope you will be mended and can start on your journey with this horse.
