Caledon Dressage show Success!

This past weekend my coach Belinda Trussell and her assistant trainer Lynsey Rowan showed at the Caledon Dressage show in Palgrave. The weather was pleasant temperature wise but a very strong wind was blowing. You can see that from these flags.

The first horse from Team Oakcrest (Belinda’s farm is Oakcrest Farm) that I watched was Belinda, riding Linda Jodoin’s horse Feng De Lys. Here are some photos.

Belinda gives Feng a pat at the end of his test. She is very happy with how he performed. Several horses had been skittish with the wind but Feng went in and focused on his job. He won his class with 73.289%.

Next I watched Lynsey Rowan ride the FEI Intermediare 1 test on Barb Sinclair’s horse Carlucci. As I watched them trot into the arena I could see that Carlucci had lots of energy! Lynsey did a masterful job of channeling that energy and they had a superb test. Here are some photos.

On their way into the ring. Lynsey does not ride with the curb rein pulled tight. She allows Carlucci to express his energy in a positive way.

We all know the saying of “it takes a village”. Team Oakcrest had a winning weekend at the show. And the village behind that success included these people.

  • Andrew Woodley for organizing and presenting a friendly show as he always does. All of the Oakcrest Team told me that everything was well prepared and well organized and that makes it easy to enjoy the show.
  • Lexi Bradbury, whom Biasini calls Super Groom Lexi. Lexi grooms and prepares Belinda’s horses for the show ring and does it in a way that allows the horses to be calm, relaxed, and saving their energy for when it matters.
  • Megan Lane who was the eyes on the ground for Belinda and Lysney in the warm up giving the valuable feedback and tips.
  • The owners: Barb Sinclair Carlucci’s owner, Linda Jodoin, owner of Feng de Lys and Suzy Zucker, who owns Insterlana NRW. I was not able to take photos of Lana but she scored an eye popping 78.235% to win the Intermediare1, ridden by Belinda. I think if Lynsey had to come in second place to anyone, coming in just behind Belinda with a 74.559% is not too shabby!

STOP PRESS!!The competition continued today and Feng was the Champion of his level and Lana was not only FEI Small Tour Champion but High Point Champion as well! BRAVO to horses and riders.

I give my heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to all of Team Oakcrest . Stellar performances all round!

    Flying lead changes, that’s standard to all disciplines. The pirouette, while it’s in the quiver of most showjumpers, so few will execute it when there is a change of direction. Most would execute a wider turn. Elizabeth will execute a pirouette to take fractions of a second off her time, which she did on Sunday.

      We usually call lead changes in the huntern and jumper world lead swaps. I think that hunters would not be judged well for a big up in the air flying change. Their judges like something smoother and quieter. At least that’s what I see in the Grand Hunter ring at WEF. I would have thought the pirouettes would be much too slow for the jumpers since they are executed in an extremely collected canter and the horse is basically revolving with their back legs in a circle the size of a dinner plate. So doing that in jump off is courageous indeed. Good for her!👏

        Trish calls them lead changes. Hunter is jumping with elegance, so being able to move through the course quietly and smoothly earns a better score. They need to jump the fence square on. No slices, no jumps near the posts. Full pirouettes indeed can be slow; Elizabeth tends to use a quarter or half pirouette, which she calls a pivot turn (another Trish term) one would use on a tight turn or a turn that has an embedded change in direction. Most directional changes come as a result of a turn.

          I have friend who was a fellow rider when we were kids and she is now a hunter jumper coach.. she has told me about the hunters and how they need to jump with a perfect arc. Thanks for your comments. Always interesting to hear about the other disciplines.

      And to top it off today Belinda tells me that when she finished her test on Lana ( and got the 78+ score) The judge and the scribe stood up and applauded her. A standing ovation. The judge is a retired 5* Olympic level judge and not usually prone to giving a lot of praise let alone a standing ovation.

      IT was wonderful to see. I have to also tell you that when Belinda finished her test( which I was not able to see because David and I were going to see his cousins who live in Palgrave where the show was held.) When Belinda had saluted she looked up and the judge, who is a retired 5* Olympic level judge, was on her feet, as was the scribe, and they were applauding Belinda. I can only tell you that this judge is not known for being exuberant or especially happy normally!! Belinda said in her 35 years of competing she has never had anything like that happen. Wowsers!

Thank you for sharing that and I have to say the horse she is riding looks magnificent and to have the wind not bother him and still perform his best is a testament to her excellent riding and training. It truly is so EXCITING she got that standing ovation of her performance!! ❤️🐴❤️ That gives me goosebumps!!

    Just stunning, horses & windy days are always extra fun. I love dressage some of the movements are truely like watching a beautiful dance.
