The Good News from Tokyo!

The news media has already told us there are positive Covid cases among the athletes. And there is a state of Emergency due to Covid in Tokyo. I realize these are very real problems. But I have some good news. The horses have arrived safely and the competition stadium looks excellent.

This is the main arena in the stadium. You can see the dressage arena marked out and the judges booths. The footing looks good too which is important for the horses.

The stables are also very nice with large stalls and air conditioning! The wash stalls are also well prepared for the heat. The big blue boxes have ice water in them for getting the horses cooled off fast. Overheating is a serious danger for horses as heat exhaustion and death can happen quickly. So having this ready to cool the horses down after exercise means the Japanese have thought ahead and prepared. Also FEI Dressage Team vet for Canada, Alan Manning, told me that no exercise is permitted for the horses between 12 pm and 3pm. With temperatures during the day in the 30s Celsius and, with humidity, the real feel up to 40C. With high humidity the horses can sweat but it does not evaporate and so there is no cooling effect from sweating .

The wash stalls with ice water in the large blue boxes.

All the Canadian horses have travelled well. Some were tired and had a good sleep in their large stalls on beds of nice fresh shavings.

Here is a photo of the Canadian stabling area. This was taken at night check when the riders were possibly also catching up on some sleep.

I would like to thank Team vet Alan Manning for allowing me to use his photos for this post. I am happy to be able to use them to illustrate some positive news about Tokyo.

Thank you for this glimpse behind the scenes! Excited to see what happens in the dressage. All of these athletes, equine and human, are amazing <3

I have been impressed with the photos I have seen of the facilities. I am curious…in the stalls…they have that ‘accordion’ looking wall in the corners. What is that?

    1. Avery Avatar

I guess maybe that is just protection for that column in the corner?

      1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes that’s what I think too.

I will have to look again amd see.

I see there is a corner with possibly a pipe or something inside the box. So theybhave put soft material outside that in case the horse would bump into the other box. That side has the bars and looks out onto the interior aisles.

So great to have an inside look! I always worry for the horses in these different climates. An issue in many of the recent past games.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes it is a difference in climate. For the Canadian horses they have been in summer weather that is also hot and humid but then they spent a quarantine time in Germany where it was cooler. But the really tough one is for those that come from the Southern Hemisphere where it is winter.

Good news indeed Anne – the equestrian events should get extra credit for having to move the horses to Japan – whew! So glad all arrived safely – wishing your favorites a wonderfully successful competition.

Thank you Tina. There are 200 horses that will be flown to Japan for the three equestrian events: Dressage, Eventing and jumping. It is a huge undertaking. But I have a friend who has accompanied man horses on flights and she says they adjust well to flying and are only anxious in takeoff and landing.

Just like us! Why am I not surprised 😊

Very EXCITING too! I hope I can find some coverage to watch!!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Me Too! NBC is covering a lot of the sports but I do not see any dressage. The FEI covered that last Olympics so maybe there will be something there.

WOW! I’m so thankful you are able to share these wonderful photos!! Thank you, some positive news is so welcome. What a beautiful facility!!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes it does look like an excellent facility with a lot of thought put in for the health and comfort of the horses.

Good news! I cannot even begin to imagine the logistics of everything.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

      Yes it is mind boggling!

      Yes! I think so too!

Isn’t it a beautiful venue? Like I said, I wouldn’t mind living in one of those stalls. The barns are spotless. I’m used to the horsey smells, so I wouldn’t mind, LOL. 😉

They’ve said once the equestrian events are completed, Baji Koen will be transformed into a park green space. I do wonder where their race horse association will relocate to. They do love their horses there.

I am hoping to be able to see some of the dressage .Of course the coverage on NBC starts at 4am EDST so I may be trying to find replays!
