The Outdoor! The Lockdown!

Monday, April 5th, 2021 was a beautiful sunny day. I rode Biasini in the outdoor arena, my first time this year in the outdoor.

A few weeks ago this arena was under two feet of snow. Then came the thawing and melting and it resembled a small lake! But now Carl, the barn manager, has harrowed the arena. It is in perfect condition.

I did a quick warm up with Biasini and then some of my ‘homework’ from my lessons with Belinda. Once we had finished that I took him for a short walk in the forest. It is only two minutes to get to the forest trails from the outdoor arena.

For me this first ride in the outdoor meant that spring was here. The weather was perfect. The temperature is a bit above average for this time of year but I’m not complaining.

Here is what I AM complaining about: another province wide Covid lockdown that means Belinda cannot teach lessons. But shopping malls and big box stores remain open. What’s with that? The CBC evening news had video of dozens of people walking into one big mall to shop. There must have been hundreds of people inside milling about. But Belinda cannot teach? We’re told the blanket prohibition on riding lessons is to stop lessons in riding schools with several horses and riders in one class. But it doesn’t matter how many people are jostling each other in the malls. Oh……and one more thing. Toronto and another district have closed all their schools. The Covid numbers have rocketed up recently in Ontario so I understand something has to be done but leaving shopping malls open and closing schools makes no sense whatsoever. Kids need to be in school! Not just for education but for social interaction and learning life skills.

That is enough from me. I am so grateful for being able to ride Biasini. Owners are permitted to ride their horses in this lockdown. So when I ride in the beautiful outdoor arena or go on the forest trails my sanity is saved!

Governments draft this sort of legislation in such a hurry that all sorts of irregularities like this crop up. Let hope they don’t have to stay in place too long.

Our district has been open all school year. It was a hybrid model and now they switched to 4 days a week. Wednesday students are remote except some ESL students who get to go into school. Desk barriers are up. Many of the students in Kinder and 1st grade come in to school, but most of the students in 6-8 choose to stay remote. Shutting down small businesses has not made sense. I see small businesses enforcing numbers entering better than large businesses. In NYC they targeted restaurants especially even though they keep saying only 1.5 percent of the cases are from restaurants. Most cases are from family and large gatherings (85 percent?).

I agree 100% about small businesses. they can patrol how many people come in much better than the big box places. But as of this week the big places are only open for groceries or pharmacy all other sections are roped off .The schools are only closed in two districts which have the worst Covid numbers. Our Grandson is still in school but our daughters family live 2 hours from us and they are in a different district. I really hope his school will remain open. Both our daughter and son in law work and although our son in law is not required to go in to the office at the moment and our daughter is able to work from home 3 days a week it is not ideal . Thanks so much for taking the time to detail how things are where you live. It is interesting to know how things are in other places.

Don’t agree with them roping off items such as arts and crafts. People can use their time with those in their homes. Books? Usually socially distant activity. You would think horse riding lessons 1-1 would fall under that. Big businesses here would only do headcounts nce in a great while. It was really a farce.

Good point about the arts and crafts! Books can be reserved at our local library and when they are available they contact you and the books can be picked up from a box at the library. The tv news has shown the roping off in the big stores. And they have security guards at the entrance and only allow in a certain number of people. I still think small shops would be a better place to shop but….

Sad to know in your place also lockdown starts because of the virus . Here in Muscat all activities are only upto 5am to 8pm. In India also restriction starts from Sunday. Whether Corona virus is there or not I feel social distancing is always helpful.

I agree about the social distancing and I also wear a mask . At the barn we all wear masks.

So much craziness that does not make sense. Stay safe, Anne.

I agree. At least the weather has been very pleasant.

Agree! Have a great weekend, Anne. 😊

There is A LOT about covid that makes no sense! I am glad that you as an owner can still ride this time…

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I agree it is hard to keep up with a smart virus.

Oh dear! Nothing makes any sense any more. I Love seeing the view between his ears and am so thankful you can still ride and care for him. For sanity, for you and I know he enjoys your company. 🐴❤️🥕

Yes it si a blessing to still be able to ride and to have the forest to go out in right at our doorstep at the barn,.,

wow thank goodness you have Biasini for a little sanity, with the illogical ridiculous bureaucracy that goes with this horrendous pandemic. It was like Hendra virus all but shut down our horse industry as they made the vaccine mandatory which at over $200 a year who could afford it & it killed some horses, the dimwits in charge finally got a clue & vaccine is not mandatory & we have all been sensible & everyone is fine. Hope things get a little less ridiculous for you all. Stay safe & well.

The best of times and the worst of times. I live in one of the best states for compliance to covid guidelines yet even here there’s inconsistency about what can be open and what can’t.💐🐴

It is tricky to know what is what, but apparently the Provincial government is announcing a ‘Stay At Home’ order today that will be Province wide. This means that the big box stores can only have grocery or pharmacy sections open..the rest has to be cordoned off. Would have been good to have had that before the Easter weekend. Anyway thanks for your comment and stay safe and well.

Hang in, anne, and you stay safe and well, too.

It’s all trial and error, isn’t it? Getting very scary though. For the first time in a year of this, all my family members have come in contact with someone with COVID – at work, school, and in the neighbourhood. Testing has all come back negative, but it feels like it’s just a matter of time. This new variation spreads so much easier.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It is the new variants that are causing the rise in new cases here. Also these are affecting more young people and putting them.into hospital ICUs. Scary times.

        It really is. Stay safe.

Awesome that you’re able to ride out with Biasini & keep your sanity (great to see B’s ears again) 😃 It’s typical that they are keeping big stores open with virtually no controls, just so that they can keep seperating people from their money 😩 Seems to be greed that is driving the lockdown restrictions, not health & well being!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I agree Jez. It’s all about “the Economy”.

Lovely outdoor arena! So glad you can still ride despite the lockdown.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes! It is good that owners can still ride. This was not the case in the first lockdown last year. But the Ontario Equestrian Federation lobbied the provincial government and said that in stables where there are horses accustomed to being in work it was dangerous for the staff to have to handle them if they were not able to get exercise. Fortunately they decided this was valid and in the lockdowns now we can “exercise and care for our animals”.
