The Boys are Showing Off!

I have had an entertaining time watching the antics at the bird feeder lately. The male birds are coming into their breeding season plumage. And they do look smart.

This is the male Red Winged Blackbird. The red on his wings is so much brighter now. Below is a photo taken when he was trying to impress a female. He flares his wings and the red stands out even more.

The female remains a more subdued with just a small patch of color. Much better for being less visible when on the nest.

The Goldfinch boys are molting to their bright yellow feathers. But the females are molting to a much more subdued hue and are more interested in eating seeds.

Here is the female Red Cardinal.

She is much more subdued color than the her male counterpart.

And so it goes. Interesting that in the contemporary human world the males are usually more subdued in their dress and it is the females that dress with color and style. There are notable exceptions but as a rule that is how it goes. In the bird world the female needs to be less eye-catching so as to be safe while nesting.

It is an interesting thought to compare the male birds to humans!!!

Contemporary male humans , for the most part, do not go for big displays of clothing to attract females. Other than some pop stars perhaps!

        Unless you count tattoos! Lol

I particularly like that male goldfinch photo, that’s a really nice capture.

Thank you. Already the molting is almost complete and they are looking more refined and much more bright yellow.

Beautiful little birds, I bet they sound amazing. Great photo’s. Once out on the property a bird called out & was so loud it shock waved my inner ear throwing me off my balance for a second. On recovery I was expecting to see a large bird but it was only a little yellow chested robin, I swear it was laughing at me hopping around the trees. lol

The birds here do chatter but nothing as impressive as what you describe!

All are beautifully captured. Lovely spring. Thank you for sharing the info, Anne.

Your bird-watching responsibilities are really paying off for you Anne. I love the blackbirds, they’re one of my favorite subjects. Sadly yes, the males are always more colorful in the bird world but not in ours!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well.it does make sense for the females to be less colorful . They don’t want to attract predators. And I must say the entertainment value of.the birds is tremendous 😃

These are grand images. Fortunately, some of us boys (like me) are too old to show off.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I think that’s ok. It relieves a lot of stress i would think not having to show off 😃

Beautiful photos and I wish we had these kinds of birds in our region. I think it’s too hot as I’ve never seen a cardinal or the other species except finches. Such a lovely post that makes me smile! Happy Easter to you and your family! ❤️🌺🌷❤️

Such beautiful bird pictures! Spring is definitely unfolding.

On a side note, until the 1800s men dressed in bright colors, intricately embroidered flare, and yards of lace. What changed men’s fashion so this boring box of neutral colors? Beau Brummell. He was a commoner who started the “dandy” movement. He was not able to afford the fabric and tailoring of the nobility, so he made boring fashionable. I could go into my deep-seated dislike of Beau Brummell, but I will save everyone the thesis on why he is such a horrible human being. 🙂

Well I knew that men used to dress with color and flair but I did not know that a single individual was responsible for the change to dull and duller.

Anne, your little picture story with the wonderful photos is just too cute!
A lot of birds – woodpeckers, jays, grosbeak, tits, bullfinches, etc. visit us again and again in our garden. We live right on the edge of the forest and that’s why they keep coming back to us in the garden and at the house and seeing what we have put out for them to nibble.
We also built some nesting boxes for the tits and hung them in the branches. At the moment they are very busy with the “interior design”, always flying in and out.

    Happy Easter, Anne! 🐇

That is nice to know you have all these birds. It sounds like a similar group to the ones we see at our feeder. We do not have any nesting boxes but perhaps we could do that next year. Thanks for leaving this comment. And Happy Easter to you too!

Yes, Anne, it is a lot of fun to build the little nesting boxes. It is amazing how quickly the birds discover them. We have also built a box for squirrels and another box for the little owl.

I would love to have a little box for the squirrels. I don’t know how they survive in the winter here. But there are a lot of old trees near us and they have lots of big knot holes in them and I have seen squirrels disappear into those knot holes. So I guess they are ok.

          1. wholelottarosie Avatar

I think so too, anne. Squirrels find their place for the winter.

I love the cardinals. They’re my favorite! There’s lots around here. I wasn’t sure which were which so thanks for clearing that up. We definitely have more males around.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

The males are hard to miss. I think they may migrate as I did not see them in the middle of winter.

      1. Cyranny Avatar

Some of them probably do migrate, but not all of them. The couple that started visiting us last year when we decided to become bird feeders, stayed with us all winter long. And if we were a little late putting seeds out for their evening meal, they would come to the balcony and sing very loudly to let us know it was time for dinner! 😉

        1. anne leueen Avatar

          Ah! I love it.

  15. Narayan Kaudinya Avatar

Nature as much your images at their best. they all seem like sparrows with different colors

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes they are smaller birds. The Goldfinch is the smallest and the red winged blackbird is the largest. They are close to thrush size. Thanks for commenting!
