A Hot Tamale horse! This is not a reference to the physical temperature of the horse but it could refer to the horse being “spicy”. In my lesson with my coach Belinda Trussell this week Biasini became a Hot Tamale Horse! He is not a horse that has a “hot” temperament but he can become “hot” as he gets involved with the work we are doing. I believe he enjoys it and this gives rise to his being more spicy and expressive. This requires a different style of riding from me. How do I ride this spicy horse.
- Keep both my lower legs on his sides and keep them still. If I need more of something a quick tap tap with my heel or with the whip. Just a light aid not a big kick or a whack with the whip.
- Pay attention to every stride. Is he getting away from me? Is he starting to pull? I must give a quick and light aid to correct anything that is not what I want. If he does not respond , immediately, I must come back to the walk and get it sorted out and make sure he is clear about what I am asking for.
- Remember to breathe. Biasini has enough energy for both of us. I do not need to add to it with aids that are too strong. Breathing will let me relax in my body and let him perform his best.
In this lesson we had a great success with the travers in trot. Here is a one minute video of our work doing travers (haunches in) on the long side that shows how a very fancy trot developed.
