How to use Herba Coat in winter.

Does your horse have dry skin in winter? Dandruff? Dry rubbed spots from blanket wearing? I think most of us who have horses in colder winter climates deal with all of these problems. I have found a product that helps a great deal. Omega Alpha’s Herba Coat. Herba Coat is usually an after bath conditioner. It contains citronella, lavender, neem oil, aloe vera, sunflower oil, glycerin, and water. I always use it in the warmer weather or when I was in Florida after bathing Biasini. He is a chestnut horse and has sensitive skin. This winter we are at home in Ontario and he is blanketed in the barn and another blanket layer goes on for turnout.

After he has been ridden I lightly spray him with Herba Coat and rub it in with a soft flexible curry in a circular motion. Then I brush again in the direction of the hair growth. This has kept his skin in better condition over the winter. He has not developed any horse ‘dandruff’. He does have some rubbed spots from blankets and I have him wearing a shoulder protector for that. But the Herba Coat conditions the rubbed areas and the hair grows back . Also his coat looks healthy and has shine even in the clipped sections.

So I would recommend using Herba Coat in the winter as well as an after bath conditioner in the summer.

Colorado has a rather dry climate, so you need a good conditioner. The daughters use HerbaCoat too, and use Purvida All-In-One Conditioner. They have a third one, which I’m forgetting the name, with Aloe Vera being the main ingredient. They stay away from Neem Oil and anything DEET-related.

O/T: Did you read about the outbreak of EHV-1 on the European continent? FEI ordered a full stop on transport, a quarantine, and the cancellation of competitions through March 28. They are allowing a jumper tour continue in Italy. The aim is to see how conditions are then decide on World Cup Finals (delay or postponement) which comes in the second full week of April. The FEI doesn’t want to postpone or cancel because of last year’s cancellation due to COVID. From what I read, it is a bad outbreak.

The European outbreak is very bad. It is the neurological form of the EHV 1
And there is now a case confirmed in Ocala. We have a couple of cases.in Ontario and Quebec but not the same variant. Odd…I never used the word variant much before Covid but now its commonplace . So that’s all we need a horse Pandemic. Makes the prospect of showing daunting if it gets worse on this side of the Atlantic.

Perish the thought of a horse pandemic. The daughters’ horses are scheduled for their vaccinations in two weeks. G-Man, my horse, he’ll be vaccinated next week. He gets the same set as the show horses. Dr. Kennerly will also do full physicals and Chem 25 panels on the horses so they can get their health certificates and update their passports.

What makes me nervous about the EHV 1 is the neurological aspects. The vaccine apparently only addresses the flu like symptoms not the neurological ones. However I have also heard that the vaccine, although it does not protect from the neurological, it can lessen the severity .I’d be interested in knowing what your vet has to say about this. Biasini has an FEI passport and as the vaccines other than flu have taken up all the space in his FEI passport the other vaccines now go into his German Breed passport. I am not planning to compete in any CDI competitions so the FEI passport only serves as a record of the flu vaccines.

Good to know that this helps. Do you think I will help Trompie. He’s got a dry skin and always some itchy patches from the grass.

I’m not sure as I’ve never tried it on a dog. But the Need oil has anti inflammatory properties so that may help if he is reacting to grass.

I’ve written down the ingredients and am going to investigate it.

It must be very therapautic brushing Biasini, I was just imagining what it must be like.

It is both therapeutic and good exercise. He is not too keen usually but at this time of year he enjoys it. I think they get itchy being blanketed all the time.

This sounds like a great product that I will look into as I am struggling at the moment with my Zina she is almost black so the mozzies & flies love her. I wash her once a week to aid in relief of the horrible bites getting itchy. Our weather is way to hot & steamy for her to be rugged constantly & where the rug sits against her skin the bugs bite through. I have tried so many different natural products to no avail. We have plenty of trees with low foliage deliberately left for her to brush the bugs off if she needs. Thanks for the info. Have a wonderful weekend ahead.

Herba Coat is not advertised as a fly or bug repellant because it does not contain anything that kills the bugs. But I find in the summer it does work well when I go out on trail rides that the bugs bother us less . For turn out he has a fly sheet. It is not so hot here as it may be with you.

Ooh not heard of this but might give it a go. Do you know if you can purchase it in the UK? As my mare Tayah is rugged up pretty much all year round due to sweetitch it might help her too 👍😍

I, too, have a chestnut with sensitive skin. He has reacted badly to a couple of products, the worst being Neem Oil. I use the Purvida All-In-One Conditioning Spray. It was recommended by Sue Pallota who does his clipping.

Always good to know more products .Biasini does not react to Neem or Citronella. But I once got a herbal fly spray and he came out in weals on all the places I had sprayed him! Thanks for leaving this comment.
