My Next Goal! Wait…What?

During the recent lockdown my coach Belinda Trussell was riding Biasini, two days a week, to work on things she felt he needed a bit of training on. I was able to sit and watch her ride which was a good learning experience for me. One day Belinda was working on the very collected canter for the pirouettes. As she rode past me she said: “This is your next goal.”

She then took the reins of the double bridle into her right hand and rode a pirouette. With her free left hand she waved, a Royal wave, just like the Queen. She did this as she completed a lovely full pirouette. I spluttered in disbelief that she would think, even for an instant ,that this was something I could accomplish. Belinda saw my response and said: “If you get him up and light you will find it’s easy to do it. ”

I was not surprised to see Belinda do this. I have seen her ride her Olympic mount Anton, in their freestyle, and execute one handed quarter pirouettes in piaffe. The point of riding one handed it to display that the horse is light enough in the contact that only the bare minimum is required from the rider’s hands and the horse is in true self carriage.

But what about me doing it? Well, we are back in lessons now and I have had some good moments of lightness that have been more consistent than ever before. So there is hope. My next goal will be to achieve that on a consistent basis. The one handed full pirouettes will have to come later. However, asking myself at anytime in the ride: “Could I ride one handed and wave?” will be useful. If the answer is ‘no’ then I need to immediately do something about it.

Belinda seems to be an pretty amazing horsewoman, did she compete in dressage? Did she decide that a better/consistent living was to be made coaching instead?

Belinda has competed for Canada in two Olympics with two different horses. She also has ridden for Canada in four World Equestrian Games and one World Cup. And the Pan American Games. She still competes. She has several horses in training . She owns two of the horses and others have been sent to her for training.. She does not teach many people. But she does give clinics. Not at the moment due to Covid. She will be showing some of the horses this summer. So she has a wealth of experience and she is also a lovely rider to watche. She is always fair to the horses.

Gotta love a coach with a sense of humour, I have attempted to push trainers off their horses in jest with a go on wit ya, It’s funny isn’t it do you find once you have achieved it & feel it through your horse you have an ah-ha moment.(after hours of practice, lol) I love those moments. Have a wonderful queens wave weekend.

Thank you. In my rides now I ask myself “Could I ride this one handed?” If its a No I immediately set about fixing it. Those ah ha moments are why we keep going aren’t they!

Of course, you can do it, Anne. Coach Belinda believes you can do it. And, Biasini believes you can do it too. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Thank you David for this vote of confidence

Wow! That sounds like it would be amazing to do that, One never knows what they can accomplish without trying first.

It would be amazing. I am a ways from. It yet but on the road to it.

I LOVE this goal, even if not completed it’s still wonderful! I bet that was so amazing to see her performing this on Biasini!! And I agree, watching (especially) your own horse being ridden is important and fun! I hope one day you can reach your goal! ❤️🐴

Coming soon. But I will not be doing any one handed pirouettes 😀

Challenging but never say never ☺️ 🐴

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Exactly! There has to be something to work towards and the journey will be worth it even if the goal is not quite reached.

Most of the time doesn’t matter if the goal is reached, it is more important the journey 😉

        1. anne leueen Avatar

          I agree!

Sounds very challenging, but also like a very grand gesture. Once mastered, you’ll probably be invited to appear at ribbon-cuttings and ship launchings!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Nope! I doubt ribbon cuttings are in my future. But as always I enjoy your sense of humor!😀
