A Glimpse of Life from My Kitchen Window.

This past weekend I took part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is a world wide effort with thousands of people watching, identifying, counting, and reporting the birds they see. The final count is as follows:

Species observed 6236 Completed checklists 302,400 World regions 253

Canada came in second place with 262 species observed and 35, 631 checklists submitted. The USA submitted 211,606 checklists and 654 species. Columbia came in 1st place for number of species with 1086.

The GBBC finished on Monday and we had a big snow storm on the Monday night and Tuesday morning. It was also very cold. I watched from our kitchen window as the birds at the feeder were struggling with a piercing north wind and for the ground feeders it was hard to find the seeds as the ones that are scattered on the ground were covered in snow. What to do? These clever little birds knew that the squirrels would dig down to the seeds. They just had to wait and then they could move in and get some seeds.

This black squirrel is digging down for the snow covered seeds.
Squirrel is digging and the small birds are standing by.

It was a day when the birds were hungry and sometimes two would share the suet feeder.

Three doves were sheltering in the evergreen shrub. The ones on the left and center were sleeping, with eyes closed, and the fellow on the right was keeping an eye out for any dangers.

As I was watching all of this I heard that unmistakable rasping roar. Danger ? Nope…the snow plow!

The birds all flew off to the trees when the plow went by. But I was pleased to see it. It meant the road would be cleared of snow for me to drive to the barn to ride Biasini. This glimpse into my life is my response to the Lens-Artists Challenge #135. This week it is hosted by Sheetal and here is a link to a glimpse into her world. Do take a look. Her world is a long way from Snowy Ontario! I am also linking this post to Terri’s Sunday Stills Feeding those Birds

That’s quite a project to count so many birds! I wonder how those little bodies can preserve enough heat in the Canadian cold winters.

It is pretty amazing. But if they have food and then rest with their feathers puffed up they get through the winter ok.

Lovely post, Anne. Those poor little birdies in the biting cold. Thank goodness for squirrels. Synergy! What an interesting person you are. I love the idea of counting species. I had no idea we all had so many species of birds. No wonder I can’t name very many of them. That’s a lot to learn.

I have had help for the Cornell lab of ornithology in identifying some of the little sparrows. Others have such distinctive markings they are more recognizable. And to complicate things some birds have winter plumage that is quite different from their summer plumage. I am enjoying the learning process though.

Interesting. It makes you a more interesting person to be learning all this and sharing it with us. I would never have known if I hadn’t read your blog. 🙂 Wonderful stuff, Anne. 🙂

          Thank you Marsha

Perfect post to link to Sunday Stills, Anne! I thought I had read this but I did not, so good! Lovely images of those cute birdies!

These are great. Oh my gosh, that squirrel is too cute! I would love to see so many birds…I need to keep my eyes open more and camera handy.

I have two on my desk next to our kitchen table. One shorter lense and one long lense. I take the photos through the window and just have to watch that there are no reflections of the room on the glass. Thanks for your comment I’m glad you liked the photos.

Looks cold, but so beautiful, Anne. Lovely bird captures. 🙂

Thank you Amy. It is less cold today but still below freezing. The birds provide us with great entertainment.

Your world looks mighty cold to me Anne! Glad the bird count went well, loved your images of the little ones, especially the 2 sharing the feeder. At least in Canada they know how to deal with snow – I’m sure you’ve seen the news about all the issues in texas. Makes me less apt to complain about our week of dismal rain!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes Texas is a bad situation. No power plus cold and no water ! Here at least we have insulation in the houses that had been designed for cold and snow. We do get power outages sometimes .For us the bad thing is we are on a well so no water if no power. We always have big jugs of water just in case and we have two wood stoves that can keep the house warm enough. The good thing about dismal rain is it does not need to be plowed or shoveled!

      1. Tina Schell Avatar

True fact Anne! We have our major storms in the summer whic cause power loss but we have a generator so unless they are bad enough to be really destructive/dangerous we are ok. I guess we all have our issues don’t we?!

The Deep South is not cold and winter ready. My graduate adviser is from Iowa, so when he attended graduate school in Knoxville, TN, he said the city became paralyzed quickly. Knoxville had no snow equipment; it came down to two guys standing in the back of a pickup truck tossing out shovels full of sand and gravel onto the road. John said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. The Texas event, that’s an unmitigated disaster. I have friends there, and they’ve been without power since midday Monday, today is Friday. Gas service has been intermittent, so they’ve been using the gas grill on their patio as the kitchen range, charging their phones using the adapter in their car. B said she’s tired of roughing it.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

The situation in Texas is dire indeed. I have a friend who lives in Dallas who is always teasing me about how cold it is up here. I have not contacted her to gloat about her situation now. Terrible!

You are very brave to face such weather, Anne!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I’m not brave really. We have the clothes for it here ans you get used to the cold. If you dress up for this weather it’s not so bad. And the snow is very beautiful.

      1. de Wets Wild Avatar

That’s very true, Anne, about the beauty of the snow. I’ll take your word for coping with the cold though! 😀

  9. Leya Avatar

Fascinating glimpse, Anne! I too feed the birds and I always participate in the bird coiunt. I haven’t read the total results yet, but ezpect it to be much better than last year – where no snow or winter was to be found…No winter, no birds! Your results were very good this year it sounds – feels satisfying!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well we certainly have had winter here this month. We have had snow since December but the January temperatures were above average. This week it has been much colder . Next week it is going to be a bit warmer. I’m happy to hear you feed birds and take part in the count. Thanks for commenting!

That’s amazing the participation in the GBBC! So fascinating! And those are some lucky birds and squirrels getting help with your bird feeders. I’m glad the roads are plowed so you can see Biasini! ❤️🐴
Thanks for sharing the link as visiting India was fun. So different and beautiful there!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes the big municipal snow plows are pretty dependable. I’m so glad you went

  11. whippetwisdom Avatar

Lovely images Anne and so glad to see the snow plough clear the road for you to go and see sweet Biasini 💜 xxx

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes it is a relief to see it go through. It is also very dramatic with snow flying off from the plow at the front.

Your world indeed is so different from mine, Anne. It is still cold in India but spring is already knocking on our doorsteps and we are just about to fling our blankets and jackets away. As for your post, it was fascinating. I had vaguely heard of this GBBC but have never come across a participant. Your blog post was an eye opener. Loved your beautiful images that conjured a winter wonderland with all creatures big and small. Fantastic post, Anne!

Thank you so much for this encouraging comment. I hope that some of my readers will follow the link to your post. For us in Canada your post reveals an exotic world that many in North America have never seen. Thanks for this week’s challenge Sheetal!

Is this normal for your area? We had four inches or so two weeks ago. It was gone in less than 24 hours. Great photos.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It is normal for us to get snow and cold in the winter. We had a milder than average temperatures in January but we have had snow on the ground since mid December. I would have thought that snow in the South was not normal but I hear there has been snow in Texas! South Texas!

      1. cigarman501 Avatar

Yes, Texas has been hit hard. A good portion of their power grid is down. Weren’t prepared.

we just had an ice strorm and I wondered how some new birdies were going to fare and just yesterday I heard all their sounds and they made it – whew – so glad

        love the birds

        1. anne leueen Avatar

It is a worry for them isn’t it I had to send my husband out for more birdseed as I was worried we would run out.

          1. Prior... Avatar

            that is sweet

  18. Irene Avatar

I bet the birds appreciated the food that was set out for them. That squirrel was sure working hard. Adorable images.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Irene. The squirrels are hard workers.
