This past weekend I took part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is a world wide effort with thousands of people watching, identifying, counting, and reporting the birds they see. The final count is as follows:
Species observed 6236 Completed checklists 302,400 World regions 253
Canada came in second place with 262 species observed and 35, 631 checklists submitted. The USA submitted 211,606 checklists and 654 species. Columbia came in 1st place for number of species with 1086.
The GBBC finished on Monday and we had a big snow storm on the Monday night and Tuesday morning. It was also very cold. I watched from our kitchen window as the birds at the feeder were struggling with a piercing north wind and for the ground feeders it was hard to find the seeds as the ones that are scattered on the ground were covered in snow. What to do? These clever little birds knew that the squirrels would dig down to the seeds. They just had to wait and then they could move in and get some seeds.
It was a day when the birds were hungry and sometimes two would share the suet feeder.
Three doves were sheltering in the evergreen shrub. The ones on the left and center were sleeping, with eyes closed, and the fellow on the right was keeping an eye out for any dangers.
As I was watching all of this I heard that unmistakable rasping roar. Danger ? Nope…the snow plow!
The birds all flew off to the trees when the plow went by. But I was pleased to see it. It meant the road would be cleared of snow for me to drive to the barn to ride Biasini.
