Friday morning we woke to -12 Celsius and our weather station told us it would feel like -17 C. But look what the cold had produced over night. A coating of frost on every branch of every tree. So much beauty! I ran around our house taking photos from all the windows. And Terri’s Sunday Stills gave me a reason to post them. Thanks Terri!

Thanks Susie. Thought of you today as our son was watching Leeds play a 4th division club in the FA Cup games. He said that the lower ranked clubs like to play the bigger clubs as it can mean a lot more sponsorship and money for them and a big tv audience. Today he told us that Leeds sent our a 2nd division group of players with several teenagers and the lower ranked club BEAT THEM by 3 ! Ha Ha! Our son said it served Leeds right for doing that.
I am really enjoying it. I am not usually a fan of cold but Belinda, who is also staying here this year, upgraded the heating in the indoor arena. It does not make it warm but it takes the edge off and makes it bearable. And the beauty of the snow or the frost and the lovely forest rides in the snow make it a pleasure. I have invested in serious thermal underwear and socks and winter riding boots for the forest rides so I am quite comfortable so far.
I don’t laugh actually. I know when we were in Florida and the temps would drop during the winter and I would be amazed at how cold I felt. I used to say my blood had thinned out too much in the warm Florida weather. Once I was watching a horse show and wearing a down jacket and a toque ( hat that covers your ears) and a woman said :” You’re smart to wear those clothes.” I replied: “No I’m just Canadian!” We both laughed!
Yes it has. The border Canada /US is still closed to all but essential travel. If we go out of Canada we have to do a 14 day quarantine when we return. Also it is not possible for us to drive to the US. We could fly but we would need to have a negative Covid test before we could get on any plane to fly back to Canada. Last but certainly not least it would not be possible for us to get travel medical insurance to travel to the US. That made the decision for us back in the summer. I hope next winter things will be better. Having said all that I am enjoying the winter here.
I am hoping that next winter will be very different. I can see, though, where it would be nice to have winter again if you’ve been spending it in Florida for a number of years. I remember the shock of spending Christmas and New Year’s there one year. The warm temps and swimming on New Year’s were nice, but felt a little strange.
Ha! I also have a neighbor woodpecker that enjoys the little bird food block I put out for her. The other day, I saw her just perched below the block but not eating from it. The block is up against a pole. I wondered if she might be having trouble reaching inside the cage now that the block was made smaller by so much pecking. I went outside to install a fresh block and saw her fly to a nearby tree. When I went inside the house, I looked out through my window and saw that she had returned to the fresh block and was pecking away! I image your own neighbor woodpecker very much appreciated having a block to feed on during such cold temperatures.
I love watching the birds. I am taking part in the Birds Canada Project Feederwatch this winter. Saturday and Sunday I make note of which birds I see and record their numbers. I have only seen one of the red bellied woodpeckers on the suet feeder but there are several Downy woodpeckers and Hairy woodpeckers and I have had to learn how to tell them apart. Its all in the tail feathers 😄
