This Holiday Season

This week Lens Artist Ann Christine has given us the challenge of the Holiday Season. I shall be honest and tell you that this year I considered not putting up the Christmas tree. Then I thought better of it. As I put on the decorations each one brought back a memory. The mat around the bottom of the tree has been with me since I was a child. I have decorations that belonged to my Aunt in England. We were very close and these decorations bring her back . Then there are the horses that I bought in a Christmas market in Germany . The hand made beaded decoration that was made by a friend, the egg decorated with blue sequins made by a friend in England. And so on it goes.

In the evening and also in the dark mornings I love to see the lights. They lift my spirits.

With the Covid restrictions our son is not able to come here to Canada from London. Our daughter lives two hours away and we had made a plan to go up and see her and our Grandson. We packed up the car yesterday with a small barbeque and in a cooler some hot dogs and buns. We planned an outdoor, socially distanced BBQ. Our daughter was making hot chocolate. We set off . But half way there our daughter phoned. Our Grandson had been well at breakfast but now he was suffering from nausea and vomiting. We said we would still come as we were half way there and at least drop off the Christmas presents we had for the family and that is what we did. Before Covid we would still have gone in and had a visit with our daughter and son in law. But now…. no. So we dropped off the presents and came back home. Here are our daughter and son in law on their front porch.

I was very sad not to have been able to have our outdoor BBQ and to have a visit with our Grandson. Fortunately by the evening he was feeling somewhat better. That was a relief for all of us. But this Christmas , this holiday ,is a very different one. The decorations do make me feel better. Here is the view from our kitchen window. I always like to have small poinsettias to brighten up window ledges.

And finally the featured photo for this post is the decoration on our daughter and son in laws porch railing. You will notice an essential piece of equipment for the Canadian winter……a snow shovel!

We will still be having a turkey dinner here. There will just be my husband and me but there are friends we know who will be pleased to have some of our turkey even if they are not eating it sitting down with us . I will still decorate the dining room table with my favorite Christmas decorations and raise a glass to all of our friends . So to you, my blogging friends, I wish you a Happy Holiday and a Peaceful New Year!

This year we put up a little lighted Christmas tree in our front yard… In mid-Nov instead of end of November. It made us feel a little more cheer. Our neighbors quite soon followed suit. We all needed some light! Happy holiday to you and yours, Anne. Glad you are staying safe.

This Christmas will be a special and sad one for us as well, but it just shows me how privileged I am. I may not be able to celebrate Christmas with all the people I’d like to, but at least they are still a part of my life.
Happy Holidays, and here’s to a wonderful 2021!

I agree Viola. We are lucky. We still have homes and are healthy. That is what really matters. Thank you for this comment. Best wishes for the New Year. May it be more peaceful than this year.

AWW! I’m so sorry you couldn’t have your BBQ, but totally understand. You touch my heart, this is a difficult Christmas and holiday season. My favorite photo of your daughter and hubby on the porch ❤️ Your Christmas tree is BEAUTIFUL! And full of memories just like mine. Your tree skirt is so gorgeous and the memories there too. I’m so happy you put it up, my hubby was almost a ba-humbug this year but I can tell he’s happy we decorated. And with my new hours I’m not so sleepy all the time, so my son and I did most of the decorating which made my hubby happy too! Best wishes for a warm, cozy Christmas. ❤️🌲☃️❤️

Thank you Diana. We love our son in law and I think they are a handsome couple. BTW our daughter is 6 ft tall so her husband it a big fellow and has a heart to match! I wish you and your family a happy time at Christmas!🎄🐴🦓🎄

They are a very handsome couple! I didn’t know she was so tall! She’s so beautiful! And has met the perfect man it sounds. I’m so happy they aren’t too far away (under normal circumstances) to be able to drive and visit is wonderful. Hopefully this dreadful virus will run its course and be done. In time. ❤️❤️❤️

We have just had a full lockdown announced starting Thursday. So its a good thing we got the gifts to them. He is a terrific hands on Dad. He has two daughters aged 10 and 12 and my daughter is a great Mom to those girls as. It is a great match and we love him.

Oh Anne, what a heart-breaker but good for you for following through, playing Santa with the gifts, and at least seeing (literally) your family from a bit of distance. Of course you made the right decision and are staying safe. I’m glad to hear you are keeping Christmas in your heart as are so many others including us. I am certain the international borders will open next year and families will again be united. Until then stay well, remain careful and enjoy a quiet, peaceful Christmas and some fond memories along with a joyful New Year.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Tina. I wish for you and your family to have peace and happiness at Christmas and for the New Year.

Sorry about the cancelled visit, but at least with the vaccinations starting, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Your tree is lovely, I hope you and your family have a nice Christmas, even if it’s by phone and Skype.
