Is Megan Lane going to Florida?

This is my third post about Canadian dressage riders who usually go to Florida for the winter season to train and compete. For some the situation with Covid in Florida and the closure of the Canadian border to all but essential travel has caused them to make the decision to stay home in Canada. Olympian Megan Lane has made her decision. I asked her the same three questions I have asked the other riders: Are you going to Florida to compete? How did you arrive at that decision? Do you have any concerns about going or not going?

Here is Megan’s reply.

I am going to Florida because I have a horse that could be a prospect for the Canadian Dressage Team if the Tokyo Olympics go ahead. I also have two other horses that I would like to get out to some shows. I want them to start to build a show resume. I expect that the organizer of the shows will have good safety precautions in place for Covid. Also, I intend to be very, very cautious and safety aware.

When leaving the ring Megan is clearly happy about her test. Adequan Global Dressage Festival January 2020

Fellow Olympians Belinda Trussell and Megan Lane often work together to help each other with the horses they are riding. The featured photo for this post is one I took when Megan had come to Oakcrest farm to work with Belinda.

That’s great, there’s a saying in our language that means, young mind don’t know what is fear. Respect to her dedication.

A considered but brave decision, considering Covid seems out of control in the US. I say that from the point of view of an Australian, with close to zero cases of community transmission of Covid in my country. Also, will the Tokyo Olympics go ahead?

I personally cannot see how Tokyo can go ahead. But the Tokyo committee is discussing the safety of the athletes quarters so they must be thinking about it. 😳

It will be up to her to ensure that all the necessary precautions are set in place. Unfortunately not all are abiding by them.

The organizers of the dressage shows also run the hunter jumper shows at the Winter Equestrian Festival. Just this past weekend they found two people who were not abiding by the rules and escorted then off the showgrounds. They threw them out. So as I see it that is making it clear that the Covid rules must be adhered to. Good!

Perfect. I wish other places did.

I can understand Megan’s decision to come down. Riding this year has been a more personal decision than a sports decision, if you’re comfortable with the situation. Much of it was having a confidence level with the precautions being taken, personal and the show management. Deborah and Tara both have horses in development, and while they would like to have them gain more experience in the show ring, they haven’t had too many opportunities to show. Partly, it’s their own school schedule. But, partly, they didn’t feel enough precautions were taken.

Great post, I’m happy for her and hope she is able to compete to get that all needed experience that she wants for her horses!

She is an excellent rider and I wish her the best. She does not have children and family to consider so that makes it easier than some of the other riders.
