The Multi-Purpose Dressage Horse!

Can he go hacking? That was my second question when I came to try Biasini the first time. My first question was to ask what kind of spook he had because I had been warned he had a “spook”! The spooks described were not a problem for me. And when I was told he was good to go out hacking in the forest I knew he was a candidate.

Yesterday we trained in a lesson with my coach Belinda Trussell. Belinda was very happy with our dressage work . I will post about the lesson later in the week.

Today we had some snow and cold temperatures (- 6 Celsius) and I felt that Biasini needed a day off from arena work. We will be back in lessons tomorrow and Friday. I told one other rider at the barn I was going out and she said: “You’re brave.” I had already asked the barn manager Carl if the road up the hill past his house was icy. He said it was not and if I was going hacking just avoid the steepest hills as the leaves beneath the snow might be slippery.

No problem. I knew a good route that would not involve any steep hills. Biasini has his snow pads and corks on his front feet and he is unshod behind. I tacked him up, put on his special outdoor quarter sheet and off we went. He started out being a bit alert but soon settled into his usual relaxed Western trail horse mode.

The woods were so quiet . A few snowflakes drifted down through the trees. It was beautiful.

A talented horse who can do so well in dressage and he can go out on a cold day for a forest trail ride in the snow. That’s what I call a multi-purpose horse! What a star!

I have always felt that taking your horse on a nice, calming, quiet trail ride helps the bond between the rider and the horse. Not to mention, it’s been proven riding helps you live longer and keep your bones and muscles strong even as you grow old. Even better it helps as a therapy in a way, for both you and the horse. Don’t be deceived by my blog being dog themed, I probably have a heart for horses more than I do for dogs! But, there’s room for both in there. 😊
Glad I found your blog! I will be returning to see more of your posts! 💖 Have a good week Anne

I agree with everything you have said about horses and trail riding and horses as therapy. I know my horse loves to get out into the forest. My husband and I also have a small dog. We would never be long without a dog. Thanks so much for your comment.

I have never ridden a horse but I bet it is a fun activity of a lifetime!

Good for you! I’ve known way toooo many people who refuse to take their horses out of an arena. It’s a dressage/hunter horse and it stays a dressage/hunter horse. (I mean.. I admit.. I was one of those when I was younger, too – gotta train for shows alllll the time).

Getting out trails develops all kinds of skills that always only help the arena work, and so many people don’t realize that.

    Enjoy those trails!

Thank you for this supportive comment. I think it is important for their mental health as well. This week there was too much ice to get into the forest so I just took him for a 25 minute walk around the outside of the paddocks at the front of the farm. It was a change of scenery and not arena , arena , arena five days of the week.

Thank you. Just wrestled my phone out if my pocket, took off one glove and asked Biasini to stand still and I snapped two shots. He moved his head in one so the one I posted was the winner! Glad you liked it.

It’s just lovely to have these kinds of horses that are great for sport, but also for just some relaxation. They really are worth their weight in gold!

I did not know that horses had snow shoes! Looks idyllic!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Not exactly snow shoes but if the horse has shoes the snow gets balled up inside the metal shoe and makes it difficult to walk. The farrier fixes a plastic tube inside the metal shoe and that prevents the balling up.

Oh my, that view! I’ll just be honest. I would never have the guts to get on a horse. But that view, those minutes as you and Biasini were alone with that scene ahead of you, it had to be precious.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

You reaction to a horse is a normal one. They are large animals and can be dangerous. But it is possible to develop trust with each other. It is precious to have this time in the woods together. Thank you for your comment.

He is worth his weight in gold. It was so quiet in the woods today and so different with that light dusting of snow. Thanks for your comment Diana.

Well done Biasini. Snow must feel strange for you ⛄

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Biasini usually went to Florida mid December. So he had some snow before he went. But today was the first snow for this year. So it’s a new experience.
