Back to School in the time of Covid.

Today our Grandson , Silas , went back to school and he is starting Grade 1. This day was an acclimatizing day and school proper will start next week

Silas and his Mum. There was much excitement this morning!

Our daughter wrote on Facebook about how she felt today and how she felt about him and her two step-daughters returning to school in this time of Covid. Here is what she wrote.

So many mixed emotions today as Silas starts Grade One. I’ve said to many friends and colleagues over the past 6 months that this time at home was like the maternity leave I never took. And as much as I’ve complained about balancing working from home, with having three kids home each day, I’ve honestly had the time of my life. And I’m beyond sad that it’s coming to an end, and simultaneously hopeful that this is the beginning of our lives returning to “normal”.Today I’m thinking of all the mamas and daddy’s and grandmas and grandpas and aunties and uncles who have had to make difficult/impossible decisions over the past month about today. I’m hoping you know that regardless of the choice you made, it’s the right one. I know that although right now I feel scared, anxious, sad, hopeful, excited and nervous, we made the right choice for us. We test ran his school entry on Tuesday night, he’s in the purple cohort. Borrowed a shirt from his sister, and ready to go! 💜 Our girls also start school this week, and will have their first day from our house on Tuesday. ❤️

The dinosaur theme carried through mask, backpack and t-shirt!

Our daughter reported that he had a “fantastic” day. His teacher is ” very pretty “and “very old”. This means she is about 30!🤣🤣

I wish your daughter the absolute best when her kids go back to school. It is difficult time to decide, and whether the risk is acceptable or not.

They live in an area with low to no Covid numbers and it is a small school. They all wore their masks yesterday!,all day, without complaint. Oue daughter goes back to working in the office on Monday. She haa been working from home. Thanks for your good wishes David.

I remember few months before how sad he felt for not meeting his friends at school. And happy now these innocent kids who no way responsible for current situation suffered without normal life is now returning to their normal. Here still schools are going in online.

Here in Ontario parents can choose online or actual school. Silas class is only 15 kids and it is not a big school . So we are hoping for the best.

Thank you . I find it our grandson is a beacon of hope for the future especially on the days when the news is gloomy.

In Ontario, Canada, Anne’s grandchild heads to school for the first time. Her daughter shares her feelings about the epic day that I’m sure are felt by parents around the world. What’s happening in your neck of the world? CA, or at least Woodlake, is still digital until further notice.

This is another adorable post, Anne. The schools in CA are all grounded and starting digitally. I hope that everything goes super well. Your daughter’s mixed emotions must be felt by parents around the country and the world, really. Thanks so much for sharing so candidly. I have to reblog this on my site. It’s too great not to share. 🙂

Thank you Marsha.I agree that parents the world over a faced with these difficult decisions. Fortunately our daughter lives in an area where there are not a high number of infections of Covid. Also the school is a small one with only 15 kids in Grade One. Fingers crossed it will all go well although Covid has a way of surprising us just when we think we know what it is going to do!

Size matters with COVID. Also the number of infections. We live in an area which surprised me when we started having a lot of cases. We are rural Central California. Our small town isn’t bad, but the county as a whole is riddled with it. I think the numbers are dropping a little, but not enough to open schools safely.

Well schools in Ontario will all be opening next week. Parents have a choice berween sending their kids back to actual school or registering them for online school. There is a lot of chatter about it in the media. Breanne lives two hours from us and it is a much lower population. But who knows? We shall have to see how it all plays out.

It would be a hard decision, but our kids are going to lose so much social interaction. Our society is changing. Look at how much we value our online friends now. I see more of all of you collectively than I do my face to face friends.

you’re right! That is a bit disturbing actually. I have people I see at the barn. It is a small group of 5 people. I have interaction with more than 5 bloggers on a regular basis.

Awesome stuff lol love the unintended humor in his words. And glad to know he had a great day at school.

Lol my grade 1 didn’t go as smoothly 😹

Mine didn’t either but I survived to Grade 2. Silas is happy to see his friends again. Its been a long haul for these little people. Have a good long weekend OD!

We are all glad he had a good day. He also ate all his lunch which is a good sign too. Thanks for commenting Robyn and all the best for your return to school and staying at home learning.

Looks like a happy little guy. Good grief, I’m approaching old age, I didn’t expect it quite this soon!! 😊

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Our daughter is 32 and she knows how old the teacher is so we had to laugh when she said Silas had described the teacher aa “very old”. She said ” she’s about my age ” .

  9. Irene Avatar

So glad his day went well. Thanks for the giggle at the end. I can remember thinking my mom was ancient at 40. She lived to be 100 so I guess she proved me wrong. . . . . again. 😁

    1. anne leueen Avatar

haha! Well I’m sure at Silas’ age I thought 30 was pretty ancient. 😆

  10. Emma Cownie Avatar

That made me laugh! Kids have no idea about how “old” their teachers are. I used to have kids saying they thought I was anything from 23 to 45! I was neither. I am sure that the kids will be safe enough (its the adults around them that have to take care!). Tough times for all of us but I am happy that children get to go back to school again – it has been too long away!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Its true about age. They must think my husband and I a veritable antiques. Our daughter is 32 and she thinks the teacher is about the same age. I agree that the kids need to get back. Silas really missed his friends.
