Extreme Dressage.

The term “extreme sports” usually denotes high risk with the athlete risking injury and possible death. Things like running a marathon across the Gobi Desert or in equestrian sport the higher levels of cross country in eventing. So when my coach Belinda Trussell told me on Friday we would be having an “extreme lesson” I liked the idea at once but knew there would be no high risk involved. So what did Belinda mean?

We started with canter work. Belinda wanted the working canter to go from the working canter at 12 miles per hour to and extended canter of 16 miles per hour and I was to accomplish this in ONE stride. And while doing it I was not to loose the frame. Biasini had to remain rounded in the neck, head at the vertical , shoulders up, hind end sitting and activity in the hind legs. I tried a few times and was not successful enough to get an A grade from Belinda. Not extreme enough. Then she asked for 16 mph and in one stride walk! OK! I had to calculate exactly how much leg I needed and how much half halt. What balance did I need between the two? If I could not bring him back to a walk from the 16 canter, boom, just like that then it as an indicator that he was too long. Keep him short and together and then ….there was the walk! I have fixed the video audio and I hope this time it will work.

What were my biggest take aways from this “extreme lesson”?

  1. In the very collected canter I need to be light and fluffy with my fingers.
  2. Bending in the corner. Never forget the bending. Bending is the key to suppleness.
  3. If I touch the rein, just a touch , what reaction do I get and is it enough ?

I really enjoyed my “extreme lesson”. I also give Biasini a lot of credit. Once he understood what was wanted he worked hard to do his best and give me what I was asking for. You will be pleased to know that the next day Biasini and I went out for a long trail ride in the forest and now he has the weekend off!

For a moment you were speaking another language. My granddaughter, six, is showing an interest in riding. There is a friend who has horses. I might have to learn that language.

You could wait to learn the language until she chooses which discipline she wants to ride in. They are all a bit different. I’m happy to hear she is interested in horses.

    Hello Anne.

Seems very similar which we do in Finland. My granddaughter a horse and I have seen her training. Here one post showing her and horse.

    Competition failed

    Have a good day!

Yes! I have seen that post. Horses are a great challenge in life. Here is your young granddaughter with a horse and also at the other end of the spectrum , me at 71, still riding and training.

        Hello Anne.

You are young! I am 76 and my wife72. Our “secret” to stay young is good food, daily walking, last month we walked 140 km and reading / studying. My wife started last year to study Italian although she knows English, Spanish, French and Portuguese as I do also. We both know Swedish and German in addition to these previously mentioned languages. My wife had hobby during last ten years German. So, daily body trainings and everyday training brains – they help. We are not eating any medicaments.

Although I am not learning Italian, my hobby is to make my post in four languages. They require time because I am self-taught in Spanish and French. In July we made a road trip to a rented summer house driving 783 km directly to the destination. What we met there – reindeer!

Well, I wish you all the best and especially health!

        Matti.

I congratulate you both on your skills with languages. That is terrific exercise for the mind. I think that we must keep on keeping on . I spoke with a friend this past week who plays tennis every day and still competes in Seniors Championships. She is 80 years old and said to me :” I love it and I have to keep going!”

Let us live a full life, as long as we can! Happy Sunday!

            Happy Sunday to you too.

Great work Anne. I enjoyed watching the video. It reminded me of when my daughter was a dressage coach years ago. She had to give It up due to running a cattle station…far too busy but still has time to spend with her horses 🐎🐴🙂

When we were i Australia we spent a few days on a sheeo station. They were doing the shearing and it was very busy. We also got to witness the Flying Doctor who was called when one shearer got ill. Thanks for commenting on my extreme lesson!

I hope you enjoyed your visit to Australia. What part of Australia did you visit ? I have lived in Australia since 1989. Brisbane is where I am living, there is so much of this country I have never seen. Covid-19 has put a hold on my travel plans.

We spent 6 months driving 26,000 kilometers around the whole of Australia. Started in Sydney down to Melbourne, across the Nullanor to Perth and up the west coast to Darwin, then down to Alice Springs back up to the north east and Cairns and Cape Tribulation then down the east coast back to Sydney. Our kids were 2 and 4 and we lived in our campervan. It was a fantastic trip and we still have great memories. We did it in 1990.

Wow your 6 months driving round the whole of Australia sounds awesome. Numerous Grey Nomads spend their travelling around Australia, I envy them and would love to do. Back in 2016 I went on a 3 day train holiday The Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth. …I enjoyed every moment.

Horse riding must be fascinating. Sadly I not able to see the video. That place is blank.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I had problems with the audio for the video so I removed it and fixed thr audio and reposted it. If you do not see it I will check it again.

    2. anne leueen Avatar

I have checked the post and the video is there now and ok.

Whenever you talk real “horse riding,” it is like speaking a different language. The “dialect” changes when you go from one discipline to another but you kinda understand it.

Glad you were able to get the video/audio synced. YouTube can be sketchy, at times, in matching the video and audio tracks. It’s quite noticeable when watching music videos.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thanks David. I was very annoyed about the audio. But I did manage to get it sorted . I have just read your desperately sad post about the death of your Goddaughter. Tragic to loose a life so young with so much promise still ahead. I’m not religious but I will say a word for her parents and for her tonight on my prayer wheel.

      1. David Avatar

Thank you, Anne. It is very much appreciated. <3

I am happy to hear that you were both rewarded for your extreme hard work with a trail ride!

Always love the videos, wish they did this back in the day but there was no instant videos to look back on like this, 😀 It’s all so subtle what she’s wanting. I liked hearing the good, good, good too! Great post!! ❤️

I have just had to remove the video because the audio did not match the visual. The audio is from the earlier part of the video that I edited out. When I did the edit on You Tube last night it was fine but when I checked it this evening it was out of whack. When Belinda is asking me to walk and I’m just cantering on is confusing so I removed the video. Did you find it was OK?

      1. dprastka Avatar

It only played for about 2 minutes and then stopped and was loading more so I just stopped it. It seemed okay in the beginning but now that I think about it you started trotting down the long side and then what she was saying wasn’t what you were doing. Good to take it down since it was a little confusing.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

          Thanks Diana. Very frustrating.

So interesting, Anne! I feel I am reading and hearing a second language. The video helps. I understand, “Good, good, good, good.” What a fun blog.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you for this comment and I’m glad the video helps. Dressage is another country in many ways and dressage riders and coaches do speak another language. But I appreciate that you took the time to watch the video.

We have a stable across the creek from us. They train students from around the county and take them to shows. I’ll have to share my new learning with them. 🙂
