Every Split Second!

“The quicker you can correct him in these split seconds he’s not going to get away.” This was the quote from my coach Belinda Trussell, in last week’s lessons, that has stuck in my mind. Belinda does not mean he will run off with me when she says Biasini will ” get away”. She means he will get away from the frame, the activity, and the impulsion I have just been working to create. In a split second all the preparatory work can evaporate and I have to start over to get him back.

The exercise we were doing when she said this was cantering down the long side, with three 10 meter circles, and in between the circles, travers or shoulder fore. Next, repeat this exercise on the diagonal going across the arena. I had to be making corrections every split second. Now a correction is not a big punishing reprimand, it is just a reminder of what we are doing, and how we are doing it. A small movement with the fingers or a pinch of the shoulder blades, a touch with the inside of the ankle, will suffice and if not then back to walk and the drawing board to make things clearer.

How fast is a split second anyway? The blink of an eye would be close I think.

We finished the week on a positive note with trot work : shoulder in , half pass to the quarter line, straighten , shoulder in the other direction, half pass to the rail, and at the rail renvers. And yes…..corrections every split second! It works! Here is video of that trot work.

I will admit I have no idea what I’m looking at Anne but it looks amazingly rhythmic to me! Biasini is quite regal and you’re in beautiful form as he traverses the practice area. Your patience must be extraordinary to work through such fine details

I think dressage is defined by the details Tina. It has taken us a long time to achieve the movements in this video. We have been doing them for some time and I think they probably look more or less OK. But Belinda has brought a whole new level of refinement and ease into it in the last few months. I now put my leg on for the half pass and ask for the bend and Biasini moves from a light aid maintaining his shape and frame without a big struggle. That is a whole new level for us. Thanks for your comment and for taking the time to watch the video!

A great coach can make a huge difference Anne. You and Biasini were fortunate to have found Belinda, and she is fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed student.

I really appreciate that Belinda will put so much energy and effort into teaching an older rider like me. But I am a harder worker than many and she appreciates that.

Beautiful video!! He’s got such a beautiful trot. You two looking great in your lesson. Every second, subtle reminders, you make it look so smooth and easy! 🐴❤️🥰

He does have a lovely trot available in his repertoire. But I have to get him into the right frame, balance and level of energy for him to show it to us. He can also trot around in a decent but entirely ordinary pony trot. No insult to ponies intended!😀 Thanks for commenting and for watching the video. It is a big compliment to be told it looks smooth and easy. So double thanks Diana!

Seems like we are on some sort of mystical identical track. My lesson this week was “quicker correction, don’t let her get away from you”. Mine likes to sneak the reins out of my hands millimeter by millimeter. When you have to lean back for a half-halt your reins are too long 😂

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Belinda’s answer to that is that you give the reins and then half halt. Then they cannot pull back as you have not given them anything to pull. And right after the half halt you give again . I do not always manage this but when I do it works beautifully.
