Is Age Just a Number?

Age is just a number. I have been hearing that all my life. Now that I am older I choose to believe it. Recently I came across a small clipping from the US Dressage Federation magazine that I had saved some years ago. It is a list of the winners of various USDF awards and it gives the age of the oldest recipients of the year. Take a look. I have added the riding requirements for these awards so you will know they did not get these as sympathy awards!

Oldest bronze medal recipient: 93 Six scores of 60% or higher. Two at 1st level, 2 at 2nd level and 2 at 3rd. All must be from different judges and rides.

Silver medalist: 94 Four scores of 60% or higher. Two at 4th level and two at Prix St.George. All must be from different judges and rides.

Gold Medalist: 70 Four scores of 60% or higher Two at Intermediare 1, Intermediare A or Intermediare B. Two at Grand Prix. Different judges and rides.

Bronze freestyle bar recipient: 74 Freestyle scores 65% or higher. Two 1st level, two 2nd level, two 3rd level. Different rides and judges.

Silver Freestyle bar: 77 Four scores 65 % or higher at 4th level. Different rides and judges.

Gold Freestyle Bar: 64 Four scores 65% or higher, two from Intermediare 1 and two from Grand Prix. Different judges and rides.

The list goes on but other notable accomplishments that caught my eye were for the Masters Challenge Awards. These riders must be 60 years of age or older at the time the scores are earned. The riders below outdid themselves.

Master’s Challenge Award Third Level: 93

Master’s Challenge Award FEI levels: 77

Bravo to all of these riders. I can tell you that the person who got their silver medal at age 94…ninety four…is one amazing rider. That is four times down that centerline, and twice doing the Prix St. George and getting 60% or better.

I have Masters Challenge Awards up to and including the FEI level. I also have my Silver Medal. But I was only in my 60s when I did it. A young age relative to these amazing riders. When I told my coach Belinda Trussell about this post and the age of the Silver Medalist she said: “Great, you’ve got 20 more years!”

So…..age is just a number after all.

I was thinking the same thing–Great, I’ve got 20 more years! I will, however, need a new horse by then…

Thank you for this inspiration. As I age…sometimes I wonder whether I’m getting too old in thought and deed. I suppose the trick is to get older without getting old….or age though not becoming aged. You provide a good model. Thanks.

These older riders are just incredible. My hat is off to them and they inspire me to look forward to more years ahead of riding and training . We just have to keep going!

I choose to accept my age as it always reminds me to be little wiser (or as far as I can). Your post gives more energy and gives more light towards life still there’s a long way and enough time.

I’m glad you can see the path ahead is longer. I also accept my age and having had some serious illness I always celebrate my age. I am lucky to be here and many do not have that to celebrate

I agree age is just a number. Where there’ s a will there’s a way no matter the age. My writing ” leader” is 95 and still writing, knitting and spinning her own jarn.

      An excellent leader to have!

That’s just incredible. We’ll be expecting a gold medal from you soon, then?

I am afraid not. I do not have any plans to ride the Grand Prix. Biasini is 15 and if he already did the GP then I would go for it but he has not and it is a lot to ask him to do that work now. And it is hard for me to get up to the level at my age not having done it before.

Is 15 “old” for a dressage horse?

        1. anne leueen Avatar

No not old but middle aged. Also the age of the horse is less relevant than the soundness of the horse. fortunately Biasini does not have any stiffness or joint problems. So i hope he will continue for some years to come. 19 , 20 and up are considered older for a horse to still be competing and most horses are retired by 24 or 25.

I so agree. We can beat those youngsters in their 40’s and 50’s hands down. Always 60’s for me.

    So inspiring!
Like the quote “Age is just a number” ,if you have the strong will power, you can accomplish anything at any age.

I do have a long way to go. If my health and my head holdup I’m game for it.😃

Wow! Just WOW! I was reading and thinking is that their age really? I’m so inspired as this is a demanding sport and to compete at that level is just about jaw dropping!! Thank you sooo much for sharing!! 😍 (My mother-in-law has dementia and is in a senior care facility at age 90, something one doesn’t look forward too. So to imagine if you keep moving, and shoot for the stars look what you can accomplish!!) I know we can’t always control the aging process, but I do believe part of aging is how you treat your mental health and HORSES bring to us the most amazing mental health advantage there is in this world! I agree with your trainer, here’s to 20 more years! 🥂 ❤️🐴

Thank you Diana! I agree with you 100%. I do not want to be in the elders home not knowing what is happening. Horses are indeed a gift to help us age better. I am counting on it. 😀🐴🥂🌹

How cool is this! I would count myself very fortunate to be riding and competing in my nineties not to mention winning awards. Gives me something to shoot for! Thank you for sharing this.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I’m glad you are aiming for riding in your nineties! I think these riders are amazing. Competition is hard work and I am only 71 so I’ve got a ways to go. Thanks for commenting.

According to me, Age should only be a number to our mind, age may not be only a number when we are viewed by others.
