Monday Minstrel: Peyo the Hospital Horse.

I recently posted a book review of Riding Home, the Power of Horses to Heal by Tim Hayes. I know that many people are familiar with the idea of dogs who visit people in hospital but horses? There are videos of mini horses who visit hospitals and care homes but a full sized horse? Here is a link to the video about Peyo, a stallion, who goes twice a month with his handler to hospital to help and comfort the sick and the dying. Please watch it on full screen so you can see the subtitles. You will not regret seeing this horse.

It is amazing isn’t it? And there are people who think horses are stupid. This is proof that they have remarkable intelligence although it may be different from ours.

I agree! When I learned to think stop or back with my lesson horse, he knew what I expected. He was so perceptive.

Very moving, thanks Anne for sharing this video of Peyo. I’m amazed at how confident and relaxed he looks in the confined spaces of the hospital. I wish I could be near him and feel the rays of his calm strength. And the kind nibbling too 🙂

I’m so glad you liked this video. Peyo is an amazing horse. He seems to have compassion and empathy. Also he will go into the small spaces because he knows that is his job. That is where he is needed. Horses are incredible that way.

There is something so special about horses! Although I admit this video is the first I’ve ever seen of this type of therapy horse. I’m not surprised, though….

Horses an do amazing work as therapists. This horse is a stallion and it is surprising he can make such an empathetic connection with humans who are in need. Thanks for commenting .

I saw some French in the video and got curious to know where this was. Turns out it’s Dijon, France. I’d seen the video before and it’s just as moving as the first time. Nice to know now where it takes place.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes and there is a second video done a year later with various health care workers talking about Peyo. My French is just survival level so I was not able to understand all.of it. But it is still wonderful to know what an impression this horse has made. Thanks for commenting Alli.

Yes I got it. I don’t look at the comments for approval until I get home from the barn so that is why you did not see it approved and appearing. Thanks Susie!

Well don’t worry if you leave a comment and do not see it right away. I have to approve all the comments. Sometimes I do not get to them until later in the day. Stay safe Susie. I think about you in FL often.

Amazing how Peyo is able to connect with the old and sick on a level where no words are needed. I knew about dogs and maybe cats in animal therapy, but a horse was new to me. Thanks for sharing!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I think this horse is very special. Horses do therapy but this one is remarkable

My horse’s previous owner took him to senior centers. I had an aged friend come to visit him. I was a little worried because…well, I nicknamed him Saucy Baggage for a reason. She was in her 90s and took frail and small with her walker. My fidgeter stood perfectly still and let her move around him. I love the above video.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

They just seem to know when a human is elderly or frail or unwell. Thanks for sharing this story.
