Monday Minstrel:To Mask or not to Mask?

To mask or not to mask: that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the body to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous virus, or to take arms against the sea of Covid 19 and by opposing end it.

Apologies to the Bard for this paraphrase.

Even the most sturdy armor of the olden days cannot protect us from the virus. My husband and I officially finished out 14 days of self isolation on returning from the USA. So today, Monday April 7, I am going to the grocery store. I will go in on my own as that is recommended. And I have devised a visor that will give me some protection from virus droplets contacting my eyes, nose or mouth. It will also stop me from putting my hands on my face. I have used a plastic sheet protector and fastened it to the back of a peaked hat which I then put on backwards with the visor in front. It curves nicely around my face as you can see. I did not come up with this idea myself. I saw, on TV, a man had devised a plastic headband that would attach to a sheet protector and I thought: “I could do that and just pin it to a hat.”

I have my shopping list and I already know my route around the store. I will be going at 7am because that is the appointed hour for seniors and the disabled. I will also be wearing gloves that I will discard after shopping, into the garbage can, not onto the ground in the parking lot!

what a great idea! shopping has become so daunting. what I hate most is that for whatever reason, no one looks each other in the eye anymore…

Yes it is as if everyone is frightened to make any kind of contact.

Bill Shakespeare would be proud and happy that you used a mask. Or as King Richard would say, “A mask, a mask…my kingdom for a mask!”

HaHa Yes! Trust me I am going to get the original quote from Richard into a post one day. Thanks for this comment!🤣

The play paints King Richard as a real scoundrel. However, if he liked horses, then he could not be all bad.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

I think he was desperate to get a horse . He was a scoundrel to be sure. And not a pleasant one at that. I would not have wanted to be his horse.

That mask is not filtering the air at all. I understand that a cotton scarf wound a couple of times around your nose and mouth is better protection. And since virus are destroyed by soap, we are throwing our scarves into the washing after every single use.

That is the best idea I think.

It’s terrible to see used gloves all over the ground! I have a bag in my car that I put my gloves in after I have used them. Then when I get home I throw the bag in the trash. What is wrong with some people?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Exactly! Do they think there are indentured servants who rush about cleaning up their discarded and contaminated gloves?

That’s inventive, a homemade full face shield. Forget the guy on TV, I’ll give you full credit. 🙂

I hadn’t seen this concept before, looks like a good idea! And a great paraphrase! 🙂

      Thanks Robert
I am happy to say that I survived the grocery shopping. All the other aeniors
were well behaved and observing the distancing. I got enough food to last two weeks at least🤣

I was thinking about you this morning! Hope it went well!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It was good. All the other seniors observed the 2 meter distancing and there were no discarded gloves anywhere. The cashiers have a plexiglass barrier between them and the shoppers. I got a lot of groceries and sanitized everything before bringing it in to the house. So all good. Thanks for thinking of me.💕

I have made my own fabric mask, but yours’ much better protected

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It’s easy to do. I went to the grocery store today and wore the visor and a mask
      It worked very well.

Thank you Ribana! I am back from the grocery shopping adventure and it all went well. Not too many people and all respected the 2 meters distancing. The cashiers have plexiglass partiitions in front of them which is good. Came home and went through the process of wiping off all the groceries with sanitizer. Whew! I need to go for a nap now.🤣

Oh yes, disinfecting the groceries is pretty challenging 🤪 I’m glad everything went well and people keep the safe distance!
