Megan Lane: Competing for a Ticket to Tokyo 2020.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Canadian Olympian Megan Lane at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida. Megan represented Canada in dressage at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Canada did not have a team but Megan and Belinda Trussell both qualified to ride. Now Megan has officially declared to be considered for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This time Canada has qualified, via a Gold Medal win at the Pan Am Games last year, to send a Team of dressage riders to the Tokyo Olympics.

I recently posted about the process to qualify for the dressage team for Tokyo 2020: the scores required , the tests required and the four stages of qualification.

Megan what are your plans for the winter season here in Wellington?

I will do five shows here at the CDI level ( Concours Dressage International) And in May or June I will do two shows at home in Ontario; one at Palgrave and likely one in Ottawa.

Can you tell me about your horse?

I will be competing with Zodiac MW.  He is in his 3rd year at Grand Prix and in 2018 he qualified for the World Equestrian Games. He is 16 this year. I have had him since he was 8.  Atmosphere does not affect him. Touch wood! (Megan said this with a big smile.) He’s pretty steady that way.  I think he likes to compete and he performs well in new places.  He knows when we are getting ready for the show and hooking up the trailer. He gets excited.

Do you find the process of competing to get scores for the Olympics stressful?

Not really. Not at all. I don’t get nervous. I like the Florida season and I have done it for 12 years now so it is a way of life for me. And ….I love what I do so its not really work.

That says it all really. Megan loves what she does and what could be better than that? Best of luck this season Megan!

Megan’s smile says she is happy with her ride in the test.

Ah, Zodiac is a fine horse. I like tat last photo in particular when he is looking at the camera, so it seems.

He may well have been looking at the camera. I stand up at the side of the arena where the riders come out and they turn to go back out of the stadium. The rider usually acknowledges the people sitting in the pavillion who are clapping and cheering but the horse usually just looks over to see the photographers and their big lenses.

That’s interesting, I wonder if its the sound of the cameras that get their attention.

I dont think so as we are quite a distance away and not taking many shots then. There are one or two other photogs in that position but I am the only one who takes shots at that moment. I think it is just a serendipity that some horses look over and take a look . And they may hear my click.
