My competition. Here’s what worked and what didn’t!

What worked

  • White Fences. I enjoy showing at White Fences Equestrian. The Show Office is helpful and well organized. The music for my freestyle is played promptly when I signal for it. The speakers are clear and the volume is just right. The footing is excellent. I rode on Saturday after a torrential Florida rain and the footing had no puddles nor surface water in the warm ups or competition rings.
  • Help to take Biasini for a morning handwalk. I was not riding till 4:30 each day and one of Coach Lou’s other students, Ciara, who lives near the show grounds, came over Friday and Saturday and took Biasini out for a walk to start his day. I did not have to arrive till later in the morning.
  • My husband David. He was not able to be there for the set up on Thursday as our little puppy, June, had been unwell. She recovered in time for him to come on the Friday and Saturday when I was competing. That is such a big help for me . Here is a photo Carmen Franco took of him while I was warming up. My jacket over his arm and his orange bag of grooming essentials: sugar for Biasini, water for me, fly spray for Biasini and a cloth to wipe anything that needs wiping.
  • Moral support from Coach Lou. In both my tests Biasini and I seemed to start well with our tempi changes but then they went on holiday. He assured me they were not gone forever just temporarily missing-in-action and would come back. This was seconded by my home coach Belinda Trussell who emailed me and told me her Olympic mount Anton once had his one tempis take a holiday!
  • Sensible and helpful comments from both judges. The judge on Friday was kind to give us a good score despite the absence of the required number of tempi changes. The judge on Saturday gave us a fair score for the test we rode, in the rain, and with Biasini giving a good imitation of a lower level horse instead of an FEI Intermediare 1 horse.

What did not work.

  • Coming to a horse show without rubber reins when there is rain forecast. I was not able to keep a hold of my reins on Saturday and once they were wet, with the ongoing rain, they kept slipping through my fingers. With a double bridle there are two sets of reins so it was double the trouble. Biasini is a horse who is quick to take advantage of that! I will never go to a show without my rubber reins again even if I am showing in the Sahara Dessert!!

It was an enjoyable weekend despite the absence of rubber reins and tempi changes. The pond beside the stabling gave us a beautiful sunset.

Our puppy June got through her first horse show and was very well behaved. Once we got home on Saturday evening she was one tired pup.

On Sunday we took it easy. I read a good book and June kept me company.

Biasini and I had some good moments in our tests and we have lots to work on at home before the next show. Thank you Lauren Tobias who took this photo in Saturday’s rain. I am getting a new saddle from Tobias Saddlery and I will be devoting a blog post to that soon!

That’s a splendid photo of the pond at sunset. And you have a splendid horse husband too! As for slippery reins, it doesn’t matter the weather or the type of reins, they all slip through my hands. Ugh. As for missing test components, I’m sure the tempis will return. I’ve noticed every year that before my first show I somehow manage to forget how to sit the canter (of all things!). But it always somehow finds its way back. Enjoyed reading this post!

I’m glad you enjoyed the post Alli. Thanks for leaving this supportive comment!

Competition or winning is just a word everything is an experience as far as we take good from it, that’s what you are teaching maa not only this time, but on your everyday life

Thank you for the comment Subbashini. I appreciate it very much.

Sorry… you look so in tune that he seems to float.

That is the goal if dressage, to make it look effortless. The reality is that every stride there is communication going on and reminders to the horse. But it is all a process and it is never dull. Thanks for commenting.

      1. kunstkitchen Avatar

Yes, I can see that communication in your posture and steady concentration. Biasini and you together look fantastic.

          Thank you!

Sounds like you had a good weekend. About rubber reins, always an essential in the daughters’ gear along with grippy gloves. One year, both weeks of the Texas shows, the rain ranged from from drizzle to downpours. If the rain got to be too much, a rain delay would be called. Really messed up the schedule. The show rings and practice rings, the footing was excellent. The difficult part for them came down to having dry clothes.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

We would have had a delay if there was thunder and lightening but rain is ridden through. And wet clothing….yup my tailcoat was pretty wet. But the new fabrics recover well. Thanks so much for your comments and bringing in information from your daughters experience.

At one show in Texas, we had tornado delays for tornadoes traveling nearby. The tornadoes never got closer than 5 miles away. It was an interesting moment when the show managers evacuated everyone and the horses into three underground tunnels. It was so much fun the first time, we did it two more times that day.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

          WOW that is pretty hectic.

An inspired sunset with an inspired message. Well done.

What a wonderful post! And I love all your photos, that sunset is a WOW! I like how you wrote it out with what worked and then what didn’t work, oh dear, I can see Biasini taking advantage as those reins slip through your fingers. Rubber reins will fix that problem! 😊 June and your hubby are such troopers! 🥰
I’m glad they have good footing with the rain! It is so fun to keep up with your events! ❤️❤️❤️

I’m so glad you enjoyed the post and my show report Diana. I am going to get the rubber reins this week!! And you are right about the footing. It is expensive to get install the drainage and the base and then the right type of footing. But it makes a HUGE difference especially in heavy rain. There was not even a squelch in the arena. Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you are having a good week .

      1. dprastka Avatar

I’m always amazed at the footing at these nice venues. I know it’s expensive, isn’t that just so cool not one puddle! AWESOME! I’m having a good week except we have crazy high winds so I haven’t been able to ride. Am hoping they subside tomorrow so I can get out on the trail. 🤠🐴 Have a great week too!

Agree with you completely. Life is full of us making mistakes so we might as well find fun in the learning. 😊

    1. anne leueen Avatar

      Exactly! Thanks Irene.

Poor June (and David), I never knew there were such things as rubber reins but they are clearly vital things! I am so sorry you had to learn the hard way not to be without a set! Darn!!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well it was a lesson to be learned . But I’m not trying to get to the Olympics so it is just one step at a time.🙂

There’s so many good memories to take away from this experience Anne and Biasini is the great mirror and teacher he always is. It’s great to hear June recovered quickly and enjoyed her first show. Wishing you all a happy new week and please give Biasini and June a big pat from us all 🧡 xxx

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Xenia and I will pass on those big pats

It sounds like an overall positive experience. It’s always good to get positive feedback from which you grow.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I think that if I cannot be positive and find some humor and learn something there is no point in competing. I enjoy the process and I’m glad I’m able to take part . Thanks for commenting.

Sounds like a lovely family weekend. To me it all sounds good.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

As I’m sure you will agree Susie it is a good time to be well and healthy enough to ride and compete!

That sunset though!!!!! Wow. I’m glad the pup is feeling better and that you had some lovely moments this weekend. Here is to always learning.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It is the learning that makes it worth the effort. And it certainly prevents boredom . Thanks for commenting!
