A Leap of Faith!

Yesterday I felt the world was spinning in a frantic cycle of bad news. The fires in Australia and the loss of life there both human and animal was what disturbed me the most. It was time to go for a hack . Fortunatley I had already told my Florida coach Lou Denizard that I wanted to book in one hack outing per week and he had happily agreed.

So off we went.

From Silver Drache farm we walk down a dirt road to the Equestrian Trails. At the start of one of the trails there was a large puddle. About 2-3 inches deep and about 6-8 feet in diameter. There has been a lot of rain lately. Lou was riding Biasini’s paddock mate Eli. Well, Eli was in the lead and he looked at the puddle and said: “No way!” Lou tried to encourage him but he was having none of it. Then I tried Biasini. He also gave it a firm NO. Neither of them would go through the puddle or even step over the more narrow part where the puddle was draining away. So Lou dismounted and led Eli through. I thought that would encourage Biasini but he still gave it a resolute NO! Eli walked back through the puddle on his own. Brave horse! Then Lou turned him and walked back toward the puddle. I walked Biasini behind him. And then…I could feel him gathering himself and I knew what was coming.

Airborne! With a leap that could have cleared Beecher’s Brook, or a ditch at Badminton or Burghley, Biasini leapt over the puddle. I am talking about being up in the air at least 2 feet and none of his nooves touching the water when he landed!

“You OK?” Lou asked with a laugh. “Yup!” I replied. I made some comment about Biasini wanting a career as an eventer and we rode on. I also made a mental note that I should introduce Biasini to puddles more often so he could have faith that he could step through the water and not need such a leap.

The rest of our ride was without incident. We made it home all in one piece.

Moments like that leap are when a background in eventing comes in handy even if it is 50 years ago.😄

Indeed! It is all still in there!

Thank you for thinking of us <3

I have been thinking of the fires in Australia often throughout the day. I hope you and yours are ok.

We are lucky to be placed relatively safely from the fire front. Our biggest issue is currently air quality which is at hazardous levels

The horse I was responsible for also didn’t want to walk through puddles. I walked through the puddles in front of him, and somehow he understood that it’s ok. It took us a few weeks of training, but he got it. Biasini will learn as well.

I think he will. I would not be able to mount up again after dismounting unless I had a log or stone to stand on. So we will practice it with other puddles. Thanks for commenting.

Riding a horse can be interesting sometimes. But ,not to worry, there was no danger in this leap, but thanks for commenting and for your concern.

    Sounds a bit unnerving.

Well I know Biasini well so I could feel the leap coming and he takes me with him so that is all good.

It’s good you could go for a hack Anne and we’re glad you and Biasini made it safely across the puddle. He sounds like a natural jumper and it might be fun to try some cross-country trails one day. We wish you blessed time in Florida and please give sweet Biasini a big pat from us all 🤗💖🐎 xxx

I would love to do more jumping Xenia but it has been nigh on 50 years since I was a jumper rider and I have to be sensible. But at least my background makes it possible for me to know when the leap is coming and go with him . He is a good jumper and we do some small jumps from time to time. Have a good weekend.😀🐴

The news is very sad and scary all over. A leap of faith is a good idea.

Yes the news from many places is troubling and scary. I remind myself that Biasini does not worry about the future but lives in the present. Gavin and Wyatt do the same I think. One day as a time.

I wish some rain could go to Australia. They need it so desperately.

      1. susiesopinions Avatar

They certainly so, but it never works that way.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the fires in Australia. ❤️
And I’ve ridden many a leaping horse over puddles!! So silly, definitely something worth working on but glad you both made it safely on your ride out! Love your photos! ❤️🐴🐎❤️

It is funny especially as Biasini has to walk through puddles on his way to the paddock here every day since the rain!

My mare Bee used to absolutely hate water, and once attempted jumping a fairly wide river landing on the back end of my dad’s horse (and almost my dad). Fortunately for everyone, she has since overcome that fear, but it can still definitely get interesting out there!

As Lou and I were walking back down the road to the farm I was telling him about you and your trail riding adventures on some amazing country. I used to event when I was a teenager so at least the leap didn’t dump me I the puddle.😀 thanks for your comment.
