The Liverpool Working Horse.(Repost)

This weekend our son, who lives in London, England, was visiting Liverpool and found a memorial to the horses that used to work the docks in that city. He sent me a photo of the statue that commemorates these horses.

There is also a plaque that tells the story of the working horses and the carters and their importance.

In case you are viewing this post on a phone or tablet here is what the plaque says. “This monument commemorates the 250 years service of the working horses of Liverpool. Hauling goods between the docks and warehouses, the horses worked in all weathers. During the Second World War Liverpool carters and their horses ensured the flow of food and fuel through the port. The carters were renowned for their handling skills and the phenomenal weights they hauled. Liverpool horses were considered the best in the land and their contribution to the economy of the city was immense. Members of the Liverpool Retired Carters Association fund-raised for 12 years to erect this monument in honor of the Liverpool working horse. It was unveiled by Lord Mayor Cllr. Mike Storey CBE on 1 May 2010.

Reblogged this on HorseAddict and commented:

I recently wrote a post about the horses who puled the London cabs. I was reminded of this post that I wrote in July 2019.

Great night time shot – I’d love to visit the docks on a night – must be really pretty.

A beautiful statue and it’s great to see the Liverpool horses recognised for their work. History often forget our animal friends and their contributions.

Fascinating info. These horses were so noble and hard working…sort of inspirational.

They were so hardworking. Thank you for this comment Gavin and Wyatt! I’m sure you have heard of many hard working dogs who have important jobs as well.

Very realistic, if the stone base wasn’t showing, it could be a photo of a living horse.
If you ever pass through Syracuse, NY, they have a very realistic, life-size statue of a mule and a “hoggee” (the mule’s handler) that used to haul the boats down the old Erie Canal, unfortunately I don’t have a photo to send you.

Well I will try to remember that if I get to Syracuse. I used to live on the Thames in London and across the river from me there was a walkway that had been the ‘tow path’ where horses used to pull barges up the river. Thanks for giving me the info about the mules and the ‘hoggees’.
