Am I just freestyling while Rome burns?

It is 7am. The radio alarm wakes me with the world news. There are now 70 million people in the world who are refugees. Our government has declared a “climate emergency”. A strike by the US on Iran has been called off at the last minute; the planes were already in the air, the battle ships had been taking their positions.

WHAT? Every morning I feel that the world has spun overnight into some new state of turmoil or disruption. And what am I doing? Well……I am working on a freestyle to music. An Intermediare 1 freestyle for Biasini and me is one of my goals for the summer. What have I done so far?

  • I told my coach Belinda Trussell and she thought it was a great idea and recommended Karen Robinson of Applause Dressage who has done freestyles for her. She told me that Karen will do the choreography and provide choices of music.
  • I contacted Karen and sent her a video of Biasini and me in competition in Florida this past winter. When she had seen it she came back with a remarkably astute assessment of Biasini! She asked me several questions; what had been our best scores for movements in tests previously, how did I feel about taking on the challenge of something like tempi changes on broken lines? She also gave me the 10 questions she asks all riders she is creating a freestyle for.
  • Once she had received my answers she put together the choreography for the freestyle test. There are required movements for the test and all of these must be included but the order and the pattern can be quite different from the regular tests. Karen had also included some options in case I found that some part of the choreography did not work well when I rode it. I went over the movements in my lessons with Belinda this past week and gave Karen our feedback.
  • Karen then sent me 8 selections of music for the trot tour of the freestyle. I listened to them while watching video of me riding Biasini at the trot and also of Belinda riding him at the trot. The timing and rhythm of all 8 were perfect it was just a matter of deciding which style of music I liked best. I narrowed it down to two selections. The next thing was to find out if Biasini liked my choices.
  • Yesterday in my lesson we played the music while I rode around doing some of the trot movements. The first selection was a lovely piece of electronic music. The second was big band jazz. When that one came on I heard Belinda say: “this is fun!” Biasini seemed to pick himself up and enjoy it too. The big band would be our trot music.
  • Today we went to the outdoor arena which is the official size of 20×60 meters. I rode through the trot tour and Belinda took a video. I will send this video to Karen who will then sculpt the music to go with the moves of the trot tour.
  • Next Karen will send me selections of music for the canter tour. And we will repeat the process .

That is what I have been doing this past week. I have been having a lot of fun! I think my coach Belinda Trussell has been enjoying it too. We are a world away from refugees, or threats of war. But am I like Nero fiddling while Rome burned? Am I freestyling while Rome burns? Truth be told there is nothing I can do about the decisions made by the US and Iran. There is little I can do for the refugees other than support the organizations I know who are working to help them.

So I will continue to ride, to work with Belinda and Karen on creating the freestyle, and to be grateful for all the blessings in my life.

It’s true that we have much to think about — but not enjoying life is not the answer…

Yes, the news can seem pretty overwhelming, especially on the issue of climate change and the rise of fascism across the world. I guess, do what you can to keep your carbon footprint small and carrying on riding Biasini to create an oasis of calm in this mad world.

Yes I agree. My husband and I are doing what we can to reduce plastic use . And the barn especially the beautiful outdoor arena are oasis of calm.

I think overstressing ourselves with today’s daily world plagues is absolutely useless, and if anything, it just makes our lives worse while we can’t do anything about it. Keep enjoying the beauty and fun in your daily life, and spread the good vibes around you! It might seem like a small thing to do on such a large planet, but if we all made our little piece of the world a better place, it would make a huge difference worldwide 😉 Have a great weekend!! xx

Thank you. I very much appreciate this uplifting comment. And you are right we cannot get bogged down. So I will continue to try and spread good vibes in my small piece of the planet. 🌺

I would not underestimate the value of taking joy in experiencing and creating beauty in a chaotic world. There is a reason oppressive regimes shut down the writers and artists first. And you can always check out the late Masaru Emoto’s photos of water crystals… joyfulness, love and gratitude leave beauty in their wake.

Thank you so much for this wonderful comment. You are quite right. The artists, the creators of things beautiful are the first to be tethered and removed. I am grateful to have a wonderful horse and a supportive coach so we will ride on together. 🙂

It is not your fault that humans find ways to wage wars, so don’t you worry.. enjoy your human’s company and the outdoors 🤗💛😍 other humans (especially those who make policies) don’t deserve the likes of you ❤️💛

I feel the same way. Here I am kvetching about my inability to find a million dollar farm while the world, and my own country, burns around me. It seems petty and foolish. However, I’ve done what I can about the decisions in the US by casting my vote and donating to organizations that lobby politicians to vote against the shitty policies that are taking over. I’m also trying to buy a farm in an area that has better schools and less bigotry than the area I’m currently trying to raise my children in. I don’t want them to think that the attitudes in this area are “normal”. Maybe I’m still a First World Jerk, but I’m trying not to be.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

You are not a first world jerk and you are doing a lot with the decisions you are making to move things in a more positive direction. Thanks for reading and taking the time to leave this comment.

What can we do? As these major catastrophes unfold, our bills still must be paid, meals made, houses cleaned, etc. Later, people reading history books will yell why didn’t those idiots do something while all this happened?! What should we do? 🙁 Good post for bringing out this question.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It is a tough situation since the majority of us cannot bring about some miracle to change things. Thank you for commenting.

Yup. True, Anne. We may not be able change the world. But we can do little things to make our surroundings better. I’m glad to know that you passed recovery and back to Biasini again.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes I am recovered and on a new low fiber diet. I just have to live with it now. Thanks for your comment Nurul.

We are all so compassionate and wish we could snap our fingers and make it so there was nothing but peace in this world. Sigh… But we can’t and we all hope and pray, supporting those organizations the best we can. Such heartfelt words Anne! ❤️

But we are blessed and we should enjoy what we have! I’m so excited on your work for freestyle, sounds like so much FUN!! To ride to music and to watch is WONDERFUL!! What a great project, I can’t wait to see what else you post about it and it will be a fun summer with Biasini! ❤️🐴🐎❤️

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Diana I’m glad you enjoyed the post. It is hard to see so many people in the world suffering due to war and the loss of their homelands. But other than supporting the organizations who are on the ground with those people there is not much I can do. We are lucky aren’t we to have our horses and the lives we have. I will post more about the progress with the freestyle.
