My Horse Hasn’t Read the Book!

“Remember…he hasn’t read the book.” This is a phrase I have heard from my Florida coach Lou Denizard often in the past week. What does he mean? Horses cannot read any books! And what is “the book”?

THE BOOK There is not just one dressage bible that gives you the answers to all your questions about how to ride dressage. There are dozens of books that offer many different answers. When you do shoulder-in you must have your seat this way or that way and your inside leg in such and such a position.

MY HORSE DOESN’T READ  No, he does not. So he doesn’t know which is the right aid or the wrong aid. He just feels my aids and takes a shot at doing what he thinks I am asking for.

FOR EXAMPLE: The shoulder-in; the text book says that the riders weight should be on the inside and the inside leg is asking for the sideways movement and the outside leg assists in keeping the horse moving forward and sideways in the same rhythm. BUT for some horses they may respond better to the riders weight being on the outside and then they move forward and sideways as they move to stay under the rider. This is not the classic approach but for some horses it may work well.

So this past week Lou was often reminding me that Biasini has not read “the book” and I had to determine how to make my aids clear to him so he would know what I wanted. Sometimes those aids would be according to the book and sometimes not. I had to be precise with my aids and decide how to apply them to be effective with my horse not the “textbook” horse but MY horse.

Just by the way….Biasini is a horse that responds best in shoulder-in to my weight being on the outside and not the inside. I was let in to that secret by my Canadian coach Belinda Trussell who knows him well as she trained him!

My next post with ‘training tips from Lou’ will let you know about the cantilever. Yes! the cantilever point and the rider’s body. I will post about this next week. That is if I can manage to find the words to explain it. Enjoy your weekend!

I wonder if you are selling a Biasini short. He writes so well, I bet he can read well too! 😉 It almost sounds as if horses are like kids, who haven’t read the book either, and we’re the one who has read the book and maybe can get them both where we want them to go….

I hadn’t thought about it like that Jeff! But Biasini is a smart fellow and so you are probably right.😀

As an occasional rider, I always marvel at dressage and the unspoken communication between horse and rider.
The precision like ballet, is a testament of the commitment and dedication of both.

      You are right
It looks like it is all calm and the rider is just out for a nice ride but there is constant communication. It is an ongoing conversation. Thanks for commenting!

Yup, you just have to look at the situation and if it’s not going to plan, try some thoughtful variations and do whatever works.

Body language … my horse, your horse, all horses read body language. They interpret based on their training, experience and preferences and that’s why we must read the book … so that our language can be honest and nuanced enough for the horse to understand. … BTW my horse is correcting my body language all the time. 😉

    Great post!

I find it amazing how even the slightest change of weight, fingers, etc can be read and interpreted by the horse. Thanks for this comment Dorothy I think you are correct in how you view the horse’s interpretive abilities.

And so much like people, they have preferred methods of learning, habits that make it easier, and preferences about every-every-everything. Finding the medium, the connection between what he’s willing to do for someone who’s willing to give him credit for his knowledge (and to learn more) is a constant thread of communication and respect.
We are not all the same, he says, and she nods, responds, and nor should we be, friend.

Exactly Cage. It is a partnership with some ups and downs but with communication it is a good partnership.

This is a great reminder that there isn’t necessarily ONE “right way” of doing things!

Indeed it is. Thanks for this comment Juli.

I Love this, great analogy. I thinking teaching is and can be just as difficult as doing what the teacher is explaining. So enjoyable to follow along in your training journey! ❤️

I’m so glad you are enjoying the training journey Diana! And I always appreciate hearing from you.😊

You read for your horse…it’s kinda like this 🙂 you read = you show the way = he follows = now he knows! Yay 😀

I will tell Biasini that this is how it’s supposed to work 😁 I’m sure he will get with the program .🐴
